DAIRY CREST JOBS RISK COMMONWEALTH
WAR GRAVES PAY
Unite secured a pay deal for workers employed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) that was among the highest in the entire food, drink and agriculture sector.
The national pay deal varied from 2 to 6 per cent, with the lowest paid workers securing a higher percentage increase. There was also a buyout of the anniversary date from April to July, which is in line with other roles in the Commission.
This April Saputo Dairy UK announced plans to stop manufacturing dairy ingredients used in baby milk formula, putting dozens of food production jobs in Cornwall at risk.
The company said that the move could see 80 jobs lost, 60 at Dairy Crest’s Davidstow Creamery in Cornwall and 20 more across the country.
The creamery, near Camelford, produces mainly cheddar and is the UK’s largest cheese factory, manufacturing brands like Cathedral City,
Saputo Dairy UK, a UK subsidiary of the Canada-headquartered dairy giant, bought Dairy Crest in 2019 and has factories across the UK and US as well as Australia.
It has recently been closing factories and cutting jobs, including shutting a cheese packing plant in Frome, Somerset in 2023, affecting 170 jobs.
The latest job losses are the result of plans to discontinue manufacturing of demineralised whey (D90) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and return to producing sweet whey powder. Saputo has said that the move will not affect cheese production.
Unite regional officer Dave Smith said, “Losing jobs like those at Davidstow will be devastating for the area, coming as they do after recent job cuts in other large local employers.”
“Unite will be working with reps and the employer to ensure the best redundancy package possible for members and seek redeployment if at all possible.”
At risk – Jobs could go at Camelford and elsewhere
Unite, the affected workers and the employer are now meeting regarding the proposed changes and entering a period of consultation. Any redundancies at the Davidstow site are not expected to start until September.
