TOLPUDDLE 2025
This year’s annual Tolpuddle Martyrs’ Festival, held in Tolpuddle, Dorset from Friday July 18 through to Sunday July 20 promises to be as exciting and interesting an event as ever – especially in the Unite South West region marquee – where you will find the Landworker team, should you be in the vicinity.
On Saturday, head straight to the Unite marquee.
As usual Landworker and our friends from Unite South West will be running the most thought provoking of debates including Delivering on equalities, Robocrop – Is AI reaping rewards or wreaking chaos? and Labour in the countryside – how’s that working out?
Plus, we have our own dramatic version of what happened to the Ascott Martyrs and how 16 women and two babies changed history –
Tolpuddle Sunday – not to be missed
The Chipping Norton Incident, and of course foot stomping music from the Skimmity Hitchers. A day not to be missed.
On Sunday there’s the visit to Martyr James Hammett’s grave, inspiring speeches and the traditional march through the village – beautiful banners filling the sightline – a truly awesome experience!

MEMBERS' STAND WINS OUT
Unite has celebrated a pay and conditions win after Princes Foods workers took eight weeks of discontinuous strike action earlier in the year. Princes Foods makes many household name products, like Branston, as well as their own brand tins and jars of meat and fish.
The company sought to unilaterally impose a 3 per cent pay offer but Unite members stood their ground – vowing to continue fighting even in the face of company threats to shut factories and move production overseas.
Their efforts ultimately secured an enhanced offer.
The deal delivered a pay rise of between 3 and 6 per cent and included other demands such as a secured sick pay from day one at one site and an extra day’s annual leave for all workers. The company also committed to the National Forum being set up and formalised.
Unite national officer Paul Travers said, “This is a fantastic win that was only made possible by our members’ bravery and determination.

“They remained committed to industrial action even when the employer had threatened to shut factories in retribution against their stand. We now go into this year’s pay negotiations with confidence that we can secure an even better deal for our members.”
