Solidarity result – members win life-changing pay rise
is now “running scared”. “Throughout this whole dispute, the employer kept suggesting that we would never see industrial action through – that we haven’t got the bottle. But we’ve now proven to them that we will stick together and we won’t take no for an answer.”
Beyond resolving the remaining pay disputes, CBL members now feel empowered to go even further in the future.
“For many years, we’ve been losing members to BAE systems because they have better rates of pay,” Andrew explained. “But hopefully now, people will think twice about leaving because they know they can collectively make their workplace a better one.”
Andrew, who is currently a one-man band representing his members – he
is the lone rep on site – reported that after this win, other members are now coming forward asking to get involved in the union. “This win is a major step in the right direction,” he said. “But it’s only the start in our fight for better pay and conditions.”
Andrew urged other workers in dispute with their employers to get organised and not be afraid to challenge their bosses. “Get yourselves together and tackle your employer head-on,” he said. “Remember that you as workers make the company what it is. A company is only as good as what the employees want it to be.”
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham hailed their recent win.
“The CBL Cable workers have secured a significant victory,” she said. “Let’s remember that it was only because our

members were prepared to take strike action the company came back to the table with an improved offer. We are pleased the new year has begun for the CBL workforce with a pay deal secured by Unite which delivers better jobs, pay and conditions.”
Unite regional coordinator Steven Dillon agreed. “The pay deal ensures
that our CBL Cable members based in the Govan and Scotstoun yards are now on an equal footing with other BAE workers,” he said. “Through the determination of our members to fight for what they were rightfully owed; the company has finally seen sense before any strike action took place. The deal was overwhelmingly backed by the membership and it’s a great way to start the new year.”
