£200 million of funding announced to address the disadvantage gap
Areas with high proportions of children from disadvantaged backgrounds
The Department for Education is re-endowing the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) with a new grant of £137 million, cementing the independent charity’s role as a central part of the education landscape for at least the next decade.
The EEF will continue to support the Government’s teacher training reforms, whilst expanding activity in the early years. This will include working as the evidence partner for the Early Years Stronger Practice Hubs, which are due to launch in November 2022, to share effective evidence-based practices with local settings to help boost young children’s development.
The Government is also announcing a further £66 million for the next phase of the Accelerator Fund to increase access to high-quality literacy and numeracy programmes in schools over the next three academic years. This forms part of the Government’s commitment to ensuring that any child who falls behind in maths or English will get the support they need to get back on track.
As part of this, the EEF will be given up to £41.5 million to continue to increase its evidence around effective programmes, scale-up existing programmes, and support schools with implementation. Up to £21 million of the funding will also support Maths and English Hubs to roll out high quality programmes to schools.

School children more informed about food and farming
A staggering 88 per cent of children were more informed about healthy eating after using online resources from “Food – a fact of life”. The popular education programme, which is used by teachers across the UK,
also helped 85 per cent of pupils be more informed about where food comes from.
“Food – a fact of life” is provided by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) and the British Nutrition Foundation, who work in partnership to deliver the food education programme to support teaching of children and young people aged 3 to 16 years. Focusing on providing life skills in nutrition and healthy eating, practical cooking skills and knowledge about where food comes from, the programme meets all UK national curricula and alleviates some of the increasing time and budget pressures faced by educators. The resources, which include activity packs, quizzes, lesson plans, Power Point presentations and worksheets, continue to grow in popularity – downloaded by teachers 1.3 million times last year alone. And with children returning to the classroom for a new school year, teachers will have even more resources at their disposal, to educate pupils on all things food and farming.
AHDB’s Head of Education Roz Reynolds said: “Food – a fact of life has proven to be extremely effective in educating young people about what food they should be putting into their bodies and where the food they eat comes from – both of which are important topics for the classroom.
“With the new school term now in full swing, we hope these free resources will help teachers across the UK to provide fun and informative lessons which help to equip students with critical life skills around food, allowing them to make informed consumer choices in the future.” u

Bauer Academy launches new wellbeing, ethics, sustainability and social programme
Bauer Media’s dedicated training provider Bauer Academy has announced the launch of ‘Community Connector’, a new platform designed to help learners enrich their skills, connect with professionals, and thrive both personally and professionally.
Open to all Bauer Academy learners, the Community Connector sessions and social spaces will connect apprentices with tutors, guest speakers, and peers from over 40 different companies. Community Connector activities are delivered outside course workshops and assignments, helping learners to expand their communities and careers.
Workshops will be split into four different content pillars: ‘Ethics & Our Environment’, ‘Self-Enrichment’, ‘Professional Skills’ and ‘Step Inside’, building competence beyond learners’ apprenticeship curriculum and teaching skills across topics such as media ethics, sustainability, diversity and inclusion, wellbeing, confidence, productivity, and resilience.
Commenting on the new programme, Chloe Walsh, Operations and Community Co-ordinator, Bauer Academy said: “We know that personal development is a fundamental aspect of wellbeing and success, and we are proud to be able to facilitate this for our learners. Community Connector will link learners with peers from an array of organisations and have the chance to learn from and gain inspiration from the best tutors and guest speakers.” Courtnay McCleod, Academy Director, Bauer Academy added: “Since Covid-19, our training programmes are mostly delivered virtually. This brings many benefits, but it can result in a loss of social connections for learners. We’re therefore excited to launch Community Connector, which provides new opportunities for our learners to come together. Social interactions improve wellbeing, allow people to reflect and collaborate, whilst developing essential employability skills.”
The first Community Connector session launches on 4th October. Bookings for sessions will be open to all Bauer Academy learners from Thursday 15th September. u
