Empowering our youth to solve the problems of tomorrow T

he International Baccalaureate (IB) recently announced the finalists for its Middle Years Programme (MYP) Innovators Grant, whereby 30

of the programme’s students will be supported to create, innovate or expand on their impactful personal projects (a long-term project undertaken as part of the programme), transforming their ideas to reality. MYP students’ personal project work was also celebrated globally

through the IB’s virtual #MYPX2020 campaign this year. All of the projects submitted were unreservedly inspiring and showcased a range of real-world issues, such as pollution and recycling, mental health, gender equality, discrimination and animal welfare. The projects explored solutions from developing a method to degrade plastic using fungi, to improving writing and English language skills in students through fiction books and snack recipes for teenagers who like to cook at home. The MYP personal and

community projects are a true showcase of the connections that MYP students are able to make between their studies and real-world experiences; confirming that MYP learning is authentic and develops

important future ready skills, like enquiry, identity, empathy, esteem, purpose and self-reflection. What is abundantly clear is that MYP students are committed to their

learning as they pursue their own unique interests; developing into people who are equipped with the creative skills and independence they need to succeed at school, university and beyond. The MYP, for students aged 11 to 16, is designed for the way that

teenagers learn. This revolutionary approach produces happy and purposeful students with above-average academic results. Teachers can flex the framework to different contexts and abilities, encouraging self- directed and interdisciplinary learning. Find out more about the MYP, here:
