Girls think PE is embarrassing, more likely to opt out of PE than boys, periods are named the top barrier


Twice the proportion of girls (40%) would choose to opt out of Physical Education (PE) at school, compared to boys (20%), if given the chance, according to new research. The research, released by physical education platform Studio You, found that periods (45%) are the number one barrier to girls enjoying PE lessons, closely followed by the hassle of getting changed (37%) and feeling self-conscious (36%). Two in five (38%) girls say that they attend PE lessons because they have to and do not enjoy it. Working in partnership with This Girl Can,


Studio You aims to show every girl, of every background and ability, that exercise and physical activity are for her, by providing PE teachers with curriculum-linked content in a variety of non-traditional and non-competitive disciplines to encourage 11- to 16-year-old girls to give physical activity a go. The research found that girls label PE lessons as ‘embarrassing’ (30%) and ‘stressful’ (28%), compared to boys who find the class ‘enjoyable’ (50%), ‘exciting’ (33%) and ‘engaging’ (26%). Girls admitted to skipping twice as many PE lessons in a school term, and almost half (48%) would never attend a PE lesson again if given the choice.

Accent Catering and Ark King Solomon Academy support communities with CanTeam


A thriving working relationship between a London-based school and a catering company has led to a series of events to sustain and support the school community.


Ark King Solomon Academy and Accent Catering have collaborated


to provide a community meal in the school dining hall for students at the school and their parents, guardians and grandparents over seven Monday evenings since January. Up to 100 people have attended each event to date, and more are planned for the future.


The school-based community meals are part of CanTeam, an initiative under Future Foundations, to transform school canteens into vibrant community hubs that improve educational and nutritional outcomes for young people and their families by supporting schools to offer an after- school food programme.


CanTeam’s goal is to create a sustainable solution to food insecurity, encourage healthy eating, and enable young people to learn and thrive. Thanks to funding from the Raheem Sterling Foundation and the Reuben Foundation, as well as a grant from Big Change Education Challenge, these meals have been delivered at no cost to the school, at a time when school budgets are squeezed and families are struggling to pay for food. Gabby Woolf, Vice-Principal (Operations) of Ark King Solomon Academy, said: “We are grateful for the support we’ve received to run these CanTeam events at Ark King Solomon Academy. Schools are uniquely positioned to bring communities together and our families have shared how much they have enjoyed socialising over a delicious meal. than half (45%) of girls said they are comfortable taking part in mixed gender lessons, compared to two-thirds (66%) of boys. Over a third (34%) of girls say they don’t try as hard in mixed gender PE lessons.


Kate Peers, Head of Campaigns at This Girl Can and Studio You, said: “The lack of enjoyment girls get from PE is worrying, particularly with barriers holding them back focused around puberty and feeling self-conscious.


“Given female and male experiences in PE have vastly differed throughout generations – 58% of


female parents admitted they did not enjoy PE when they were in school compared to 34% of male parents – it’s high time this gap in enjoyment is addressed.


“This is why Studio You is so important, to show every girl that getting active is for them. We know that experiences with exercise in your teens can absolutely shape your relationship with getting active in later life. Our panel event will be tackling the taboos and stereotypes of PE, helping girls discover the range of activities they can get involved in and the benefits of physical activity.”

Half of state schools struggle with work experience, but logistics may hold the answer


A new report has revealed that over half of state school students lack access to work experience, putting them at a significant disadvantage when applying to universities. With one third of universities


taking work experience into consideration when reviewing applicants, it’s crucial that state schools look to improve work experience offering. Speakers for Schools’ report also highlights that university applicants from affluent areas of the UK are nearly six times more likely to have a prestigious university offer, such as from a Russell Group institution, than those living in disadvantaged areas.


With a lack of resources, funding and dedicated staff to create work experience offerings, state schools severely struggle finding the capacity to create work experience opportunities for pupils. Yet the UK’s hidden sector of logistics may be the answer that schools are looking for. Logistics is a career path that over 90% of the UK have never considered, as revealed by Generation Logistics, an awareness campaign for the sector. When it comes to work experience, logistic companies can provide a solution to state schools, with opportunities spanning engineering, digital technology, HR, Marketing, Finance and more.


The Generation Logistics Education Hub is an online, downloadable resource library of KS3 to KS5 curriculum-relevant material for teachers and career advisors.
