Celebrate Pride Month 2022with British Army LGBTQ+ student resources
The British Army is marking the start of Pride Month by urging secondary school teachers to download its free, award- winning resource, LGBTQ+ Voices. It helps students build upon their understanding of the LGBTQ+ community, including trans rights. The LGBTQ+ Voices aligns to the Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers education, creating a space for discussion of careers and workplaces through curriculum learning. LGBTQ+ Voices has been downloaded more than 2,000 times since it launched last year and provides teachers with curriculum links to PSHE or
Health and Wellbeing, Citizenship and History. It features both a lesson plan and an assembly with interactive tasks. Together, they aim to challenge perceptions of the LGBTQ+ community and help students aged 11–16 understand the importance of diversity and inclusion. The award-winning resource enables students to explore the contributions
of LGBTQ+ Army personnel past and present. It features four fascinating case studies, including Deborah Penny, the first trans soldier in the British Army. Many teachers feel ill-equipped to answer any questions that students may
have around trans rights. It is hoped that LGBTQ+ Voices will play an important contribution to the current debate. By giving students the tools that they need, they can play their part in addressing the inequality and discrimination felt by the trans community. Students will understand why being an LGBTQ+ ally is so very important, even if they don’t identify as LGBTQ+. LGBTQ+ Voices was developed with teachers and support from the Army
LGBTQ+ network. Teachers have remarked how the resources are “rich in information”. They offer “powerful” learning, are “self-contained” and are “simple to use”, especially for non-specialists and those less confident in discussing LGBTQ+ topics. Teachers can download LGBTQ+ Voices for free at: u

Food Waste Warrior resource to increase understanding about food waste
Baylab, Bayer’s free laboratory for schools, has teamed up with Veg Power, a not-for-profit dedicated to getting kids to eat more veg, to bring Key Stage 2 year groups across the UK, a brand-new online resource. Focusing on how important the reduction of food waste is for protecting our environment, the ‘Food Waste Warrior’ activity has been designed in line with KS2 learning opportunities. Baylab Manager Emma Schierbaum promises
it will be both fun and educational, stating that “Years 3 – 6 students will need to help Sydney the Scientist in her quest to reduce food waste from field to fork, by completing a number of all-important missions.” Utilising analysis, literacy, and numeracy skills, students will need to be responsible for monitoring food waste in their home in order to gain an official Food Waste Warrior title and certificate! “With the right knowledge and enthusiasm,
kids can have such a positive influence on food waste in their home”, says Veg Power’s Chief Executive, Dan Parker. “With veg as a focus, shared homework tasks are a great way to get kids and grown-ups to consider how to store veg efficiently, ways to eat more parts of a vegetable, and how to make the most out of leftovers. Any vegetables left

on the plate at the end of one meal are the building blocks for the next meal, reducing what lands in the bin, and saving money at the same time”. Adding to the importance of Food Waste Warrior
is the fact that 80% of children are not eating enough vegetables. Veg Power’s mission is to inspire kids from an early age to adopt veggie loving habits. The project supports that mission by raising awareness about food waste amidst the next generation. Bayer’s Project Manager, Bethany Leaver says the
overwhelming response Baylab has already received to its food waste themed initiative this year shows there is genuine interest in the issue. “Food Waste Warrior aims to continue the momentum of conversation we now have going on what is a key, daily issue for our planet. “On behalf of everyone involved in this
collaboration, we’re delighted to be offering Food Waste Warrior as a permanently available, free of charge resource for Years 3 – 6 teachers and their
students. We hope they find it a truly valuable addition to their curriculum”. u
