COMPETITION
How winning an ActivPanel transformed learning at Spire Junior School S
pire Junior School succeeded in winning an ActivPanel after entering the 'Classroom
Stories' competition from global education technology company, Promethean. Here, Dave Shaw, Headteacher at the school, shares how this advanced interactive flat panel display is having a positive impact on teaching and learning.
Tapping into the ActivPanel’s potential Since winning the competition in 2019, we’ve really taken the time to explore the endless possibilities the Promethean ActivPanel presents. It’s safe to say that our students love engaging with the preloaded apps, which not only encourage excitement but also boost healthy competition in the classroom. Whether we’re using The Spinner, a great
alternative to the more traditional raising of hands, or The Timer, which provides a countdown on activities and quizzes, engaging with the apps definitely elevates the classroom experience for our young learners and demonstrates just how exciting learning can be. Through the Screen Share app, we can
celebrate individual successes by casting the work of the students on the ActivPanel. We then use the Annotate App to highlight achievements, identify misconceptions and ultimately engage the children in their learning. This tool is particularly effective if a student has completed an impressive piece of writing or solved an ambitious maths problem. Through engaging with the free apps
preloaded onto the ActivPanel, our students are now more comfortable than ever with sharing their achievements and welcoming feedback from their classmates, which has become an important part of Spire’s approach to teaching and learning. A great example of this is our wellbeing advent
calendar which we use to encourage whole-class participation and get the students up and moving.
Using the Promethean ActivPanel to support,
the students take it in turns to go up to the ActivPanel and pick a date that corresponds with a wellbeing activity, such as friendship paper chains or healthy eating diaries. These activities have become essential in increasing the student’s morale, encouraging inclusivity, and promoting the importance of wellbeing inside and outside the classroom.
Not just for the students…. Since winning the Classroom Stories competition, we’ve found that engaging with classroom technology fosters a sense of freedom, and our teachers are motivated to find exciting ways of delivering engaging and dynamic lesson content. At Spire junior School, we’re always learning
and adapting our teaching methods to provide the best classroom experiences for our students. Communicating with our colleagues on social media, we are continually sharing and receiving
best practice advice on technology use in lessons to fuel discussion and interactivity.
Encouraging words from a previous winner… The additional support we’ve received from Promethean as part of the winning package has also been incredibly valuable in guiding us on our path to success. The training has given our teachers and
support staff the essential skills to approach the ActivPanel confidently and competently, and now we’re on our own journey to gain additional skills and discover new and exciting ways to incorporate edtech into our lessons. We would encourage anyone who is thinking
of entering the Classroom Stories competition to seize the opportunity and run with it – it’s a truly wonderful opportunity to create an entry your whole school can be proud of through collaboration and teamwork!
