CONTENTS Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. In our final issue of the school year, this month we take an in-depth look at mitigating summer learning loss, asking how we can ensure pupils return to school in September ready

to learn, but also whether we are worrying too much about learning loss and whether in fact children should be allowed to switch off during the summer break. In our first feature on the topic we hear from Rebecca Smith, a former primary school Assistant Headteacher who now runs her own successful tuition business, looks at what summer learning loss is, offers some useful pointers for tackling it, and asks whether in fact we’re making too much of a phenomenon that could actually be a blessing in disguise. In our second, Becky Ward, Education Experience Specialist at Tutor Doctor, shares her tips for ensuring students return to the classroom ready to learn, while in our third, Florence Milner, UK Schools General Manager at MyTutor, explains the benefits of summer tutoring. Finally, in our fourth feature this month, journalist and regular Education Today contributor Sal McKeown explores the whole debate around summer learning loss and wonders if we’re not making more of it than we need to. Elsewhere we have all our regulars on hand to offer insight and advice, and have a fantastic View from the classroom piece this month featuring Nicola Jane Buttigieg, Head of Computer Science, Sutton High School Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) & GDST Space Technology Programme Lead, who tells us about the school’s Computer science curriculum and the Trust-wide Space Technology A-level extension programme. Remember, we love to hear from you, you can get in touch with us via Twitter @ EdTodayMag, as well as by phone or email – have a restful summer break and see you in September!
