4-11 NEWS Highlights from the UK education sector 7 VIEWS

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. Now that you’re back to the serious business of teaching, I’m sure it won’t have escaped your notice that there are a few items of education policy which currently need addressing. We have the recently released report from The Education Policy Institute highlighting the long working hours of teachers in the UK – one in five currently work 60 hours a week. On top of that, there is a pressing need for more new schools to be built. And finally comes the news that debts run up by 113 academy trusts in England amount to almost £25m, prompting Meg Hillier, chairwoman of the Commons Public Accounts Committee, to comment that this raises "serious concerns about the accountability" of the academy system. This all suggests a government needing to get a grip on education policy to ensure we have a system capable of delivering the first class education we all want for our children. Moving on to the issue, we first take a look

at sharing best practice in the company of Phil Smith, deputy headteacher at John Port School in Etwall, South Derbyshire. We follow with a piece from Claire Osbourne, senior advisor for behaviour and emotional difficulties at Telford and Wrekin council, about its emotional learning programme. We have our regular contributors as always,

and a great line up of comment and opinion to get you talking. We also continue our section on recruitment, and have some great jobs for you this month. Finally, we continue our series on the

members of BESA (the UK trade body for suppliers to the education sector) with a look at New Era Education and the Show My Homework. Remember, you can get in touch with us via

Twitter, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. We love hearing from you! Enjoy the issue!
