ROUND UP W
e often remember advice best when it comes ‘straight from the horse’s mouth’. The best career guidance comes direct from professionals. The Career Footsteps campaign, led by education charity the Edge Foundation, matches professionals with schools so students can hear directly about a variety of jobs and career pathways from the people who know best. Usman Ali, aged 31, left school with no qualifications to work in his dad’s shop. Realising his options were limited, he did an apprenticeship in business administration and is now diversity and inclusion ambassador for the Ministry of Justice and a Career Footsteps volunteer.
He recently attended an event at his former school in Bradford, saying, ‘I didn’t know then what my assets and skills were and what I could utilise.’ One of the organisers from the school said, ‘It’s all about inspiring young people, raising their expectations and broadening their knowledge of the pathways open to them. The volunteers have shared their very different career routes and for some students, that will be life-changing.’ Every young person needs high-quality career guidance to make informed decisions about their future. Our programme provides schools with all the help and support they need to host a successful Career Footsteps event for their students.

DELTA SECURITY installs access control system at Gesher School
D
elta Security, the CCTV and access control specialist, is helping to ensure the safety of pupils and employees at the recently opened Gesher School with the installation of a sophisticated Salto access control and ID pass system. Based in North London, Gesher School is an independent primary school that caters for Jewish children with special educational needs. The Salto access control solution provides secure and convenient day-to- day access for authorised users, and enables school staff to print temporary ID passes for additional staff and visitors as required. The system’s easy-to-use software is capable of granting and restricting access to personnel according to their authorised area and duration of visit.
The school shares its site with another local authority children’s programme so it is especially important that it is able to restrict access and have a
reliable system to ensure it knows who is on site at any time. Reports detailing who has visited the school, and for how long, are available at the touch of a button.

“Distance” learning no substitute for “real” interaction, CICM warns
N
ew research from the Chartered Institute of Credit Management (CICM) suggest that while distance learning has its place, face-to-face education, in a real or virtual classroom, delivers three-times better results. Debbie Tuckwood, CICM Head of Education and Professional Development, is concerned that while some learners may be happy with distance learning, they miss out on the interaction with their peers and teacher: “People generally learn better from each other,” she explains. She points to recent CICM examination results in support of her view: “Learners studying for example at college or through a virtual class are three times more likely to pass CICM qualifications than learners who have studied by distance learning. Also, they are more likely to gain a good pass and progress their studies to the stage where they enter an exam or assignment for assessment.”
New CICM Level 3 and Level 5 Diploma programmes start in January.
CHUBB installs fire and security software upgrade at Coleg Menai
C
hubb Fire & Security Limited is helping Welsh further education college Coleg Menai to further protect students, staff and property by upgrading its fire and security management software. Chubb’s new Advisor Management software manages and controls 18 panels at the college’s Bangor Campus and two main sites in Holyhead and Llangefni. It provides one single interface for fire detection, intruder alarm, access control and CCTV system management.
“Initially, we
approached Chubb regarding panel upgrades,” said Andy Tomlinson, estates services officer, Coleg Menai. “But on further discussion with our Chubb account manager and a consultation period
with our tech teams, it was decided that the Advisor Management software would provide significant efficiencies to the way we manage our fire and security systems.”
The software can be accessed remotely and by more than one operator at a time, providing facilities management teams with a reliable, efficient, responsive and highly powerful system.
