Transforming Inclusive Practice Across a Multi-Academy Trust
W
ith a clear commitment to accessibility, Westcountry Schools Trust sought a solution that could support consistent, high-quality teaching for all learners. By adopting Widgit Online, they have embedded a shared visual language across their schools, supporting pupils from nursery through to post-16 education. At the heart of this approach is the power of dual coding: combining text with symbols to enhance understanding, reduce cognitive load and improve engagement. Across the trust, classrooms now benefit from visual timetables, accessible displays, consistent labelling and communication tools. Widgit symbols are embedded throughout teaching, with adaptive scaffolds ranging from sentence stems and key vocabulary boards to flashcards, ensuring a consistent approach across teaching materials.
Staff also create tailored resources for pupils who require additional support, including personalised timetables, communication boards, and social stories. This flexible approach enables teachers to adapt learning, ensuring every student can succeed.
Importantly, this approach extends beyond the classroom. Widgit Symbols are used in staff training to model best practice and ensure accessibility for adult learners, helping to drive a consistent, trust-wide approach to inclusive communication.
By integrating Widgit Online across all schools, Westcountry Schools Trust has successfully enhanced its inclusive teaching approach. The trust’s commitment to accessibility and consistency has provided students with the support they need to thrive, making learning more engaging and effective for all.
‘We are proud to say that all schools in our trust use Widgit Online. We use it in a variety of ways, but all with the similar intent to ensure teaching is accessible to all pupils.’ Caroline Kearney, Inclusion Lead Practitioner
