Finding ways to cut costs that won’t affect the quality of your sports floor W

hen an existing synthetic polyurethane floor failed after only seven years of use,

University of Liverpool contacted Courtcraft, one of Junckers’ Approved Contractors, to provide a safe, long-lasting and economical flooring solution for the university’s sports hall. Courtcraft’s immediate suggestion was for a Junckers sports flooring system, a solid hardwood floor fitted over a fully sprung subfloor system. Normally, the new flooring would be fitted

following the removal of the existing floor, but as the university was limited by cost constraints, it asked Courtcraft to explore the possibility of proceeding without the removal of the old floor. Following discussions with Junckers’ Technical Department, Courtcraft suggested the existing floor should be able to provide a stable enough substrate to lay a Junckers UnoBat 45 subfloor system and Beech SylvaSport floor directly on top. This helped the University to defer both costs of removal and the difficulties of disposing of the synthetic floor. Junckers and Courtcraft built a test area in

order to determine the installation would meet the European A4 rating for an area elastic floor. The testing was commissioned by Junckers, conducted by the Centre for Sports Technology, the UK’s leading independent laboratory devoted to testing sport surfaces. As predicted, the results showed Junckers

22mm Beech SylvaSport Premium floor fitted over Junckers UnoBat 45 battens on top of the existing floor fulfilled the requirements for BS EN 14904:2006 Surfaces for sport areas – indoor surfaces for multi-sport use:

• Shock Absorption (type A4) • Vertical Deformation (Type A4) • Surface Friction (Type A4) • Vertical Ball Behaviour (Type A4)

The installation at University of Liverpool Sports

Centre proves Junckers commitment to provide innovative and flexible solutions to deliver on

client needs. Working alongside long-standing Approved Contractor Courtcraft, Junckers was able to save the University a considerable amount in refurbishment costs. This type of flooring installation will not be possible on all types of existing floors and will need to be assessed on an individual basis. Greg Martin, Sports Operations Manager at

University of Liverpool added: “We saved a considerable amount of time and money thanks to Courtcraft and Junckers’ solution to fit the new floor on top of the old one, without removing it. They commissioned independent testing to make sure the floor would conform to the right standards, we felt in safe hands throughout the process and now have a state of the art, new sports floor - the hardwood floor looks great compared with the synthetic floor it has replaced.” Working with experienced professionals and a specialist manufacturer has resulted in a very

successful refurbishment of the University’s sports hall floor which is now equipped with a long- lasting, safe and high performing surface with exceptionally low life cycle costs. The floor is arguably the most important

element in a sports or multi-purpose hall because it is the surface with which players have the closest interaction. They rely on it for safety and to allow them to perform to the best of their abilities - consistent ball bounce, not too slippery and not too much grip under foot, protection from impact injuries and reducing stress to joints and tendons. A comfortable floor will help athletes to achieve their best performance not only in competition, but when learning new skills, so it is not just at the top level that it is important to have a “proper” sports floor. You can usually see the signs when a sports or

activity floor has reached the end of its days - it may have borne all the repairs it possibly can, it could be unsafe to use or no longer be capable of taking the loads and impacts it once could. A good quality sports floor can offer a school or other education facility a valuable source of income but in order to keep bookings coming in, the floor has to have good all-round performance, not just look good on the surface.
