CONTENTS Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. At the time of writing, the government seems set to announce the partial reopening of schools at the beginning of June, with Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 slated to return to school. While the gradual return to normal which this hints at is welcome, quite how these year groups were chosen is a bit of a mystery – many in the profession have been saying that, if schools have to reopen, then older children should return first, because in the main they would be able to follow social distancing rules more effectively than younger children, albeit with enormous caveats about the size of classes and the use of school facilities. I am cautious to explore this too much however, because I’m not sure this plan will survive scrutiny – like much about this pandemic, I suppose we shall have to wait and see. Moving on to the magazine this month,

I’m delighted to be showcasing in our first feature the winners and highly commended entrants in the Education Resources Awards 2020. Although the physical event had to be cancelled this year, we still went ahead and held it virtually – you can see the results at https://youtu.be/9km3p6nOPo4 Congratulations to everyone who entered, and all being well we’ll see you in Birmingham next year! Meanwhile, in our second feature, we hear from Caitlin Brown, Education Manager at the British Science Association, who offers her ideas for the top five science activities to keep children of all ages engaged and entertained during lockdown. Elsewhere, we have all the usual news

and views, as well as a great “View from the virtual classroom” with Daniel Melbourne at Radnor House in Sevenoaks, who tells us how the school has been keeping its pupils engaged and learning during lockdown. Remember, we love to hear from you, you can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. Enjoy the issue and stay safe!
