Breaking down the barriers to

outdoor education Education Today takes a look at the work being done by Boundless Outdoors, Worcestershire’s leading outdoor education provider, to offer fully funded residential experiences to local schools this winter.

F

ollowing a £35,000 grant from the Adventures Away from Home initiative, not-for-profit organisation Boundless Outdoors is using the funding to provide over 170 free places for young people across the county, removing barriers to outdoor learning and ensuring that more pupils than ever can benefit from the life-changing impact of time spent in nature.

Schools participating in the initiative include St James’ CE Primary, Malvern Wells Primary, Welland Primary, Madresfield, Grove Primary, Colwall CofE Primary, Powick Primary, Great Malvern Primary, Malvern Parish School, Somers Park, St Joseph’s, George Merchant School, and Northleigh Primary. They are joined by secondary-age pupils from Kinver High, Stourport High, Droitwich High, and Tudor Grange Worcester.

These schools will be among the first to take part in the free two- and three-day residentials through to March this year.

Designed for underrepresented and disadvantaged young people, the programme provides everything from accommodation and food to activities like climbing, bushcraft and team building. Boundless Outdoors will deliver:

• 100 three-day residentials • 45 two-day overnight stays • 30 one-day activity visits

January 2026

All experiences are tailored to support groups facing challenges such as poverty, disability, care experience, low academic attainment, or those with caring responsibilities, among others. The aim: to give young people a break from the pressures of everyday life and build confidence, resilience and connection.

“Everyone deserves the chance to step away from the classroom and into adventure,” said Nick Hands, CEO of Boundless Outdoors. “This funding allows us to offer that opportunity to young people who might otherwise miss out. We’re incredibly proud to be working with schools across Worcestershire to make it happen.”

Part of the UK-wide Adventures Away from Home programme delivered by UK Youth and the Outward Bound Trust, the initiative champions the power of the outdoors in improving mental wellbeing, social skills, and educational engagement.

This latest funding win comes off the back of a record year for Boundless Outdoors, whose sites in Malvern and Bell Heath have welcomed over 10,000 children in 2025 alone.

With every visit helping fund future opportunities, Boundless Outdoors continues to deliver on its mission: to inspire, nurture, and empower young people through unforgettable outdoor learning.
