CONTENTS In this issue... Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. As we look to the end of term and thoughts turn to Christmas, now might be a good time to look back over the events of what can only be described as an awful year for the country. The coronavirus pandemic has ruined lives and livelihoods, but one light has shone in the darkness – the determination of the education sector to keep our children learning during the most difficult of circumstances. The efforts of all involved in the education of the nation’s young people has highlighted that teaching is not just a job, it is a calling, and every single one of you deserves enormous credit for the work and dedication you’ve shown during the year. I’m sure you will be looking forward to the Christmas break, and I wish you all a peaceful and restful holiday. In the magazine this month, in addition

to all the regular content and opinion, we have five features to share with you, covering cultural education and mental health and wellbeing. In our focus on cultural education, we hear from author Phil Beadle, who examines what cultural capital is, why it should be questioned and what it means for teaching in secondary schools; ACS International School Cobham, whose High School students have created an uplifting prom-themed film as an innovative way to continue, and evolve, the school’s performing arts programme; Paul Reeve, CEO of education charity Into Film, who examines the important role film plays in cultural education; and Jonathan Douglas CBE, Chief Executive of the National Literacy Trust, who discusses why tailored, place-based arts and cultural initiatives are so important in boosting the literacy of people living in the most disadvantaged areas. Finally, in our wellbeing slot, Dr Margot Sunderland, Co-Director of Trauma Informed Schools UK, looks at resilience and what it means in the current pandemic. Remember, we love to hear from you, you can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. Enjoy the issue, and here’s to a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
