MrsWrigley invited a representative from Emipiribox to meet with herself and a group of Liverpool Headteachers.

Having seen what Empiribox could offer, she was overwhelmed by the idea and knew that it would work really well here at Greenbank as we are always looking for innovative and exciting ways to delivering the primary curriculum.

We invited the Empiribox team to the school who talked to us in detail about the service and how it benefits both teachers and pupils.

Once we received the resources we trialled Empiribox with our year groups and it was an instant hit! Everyone was switched on and eager to participate during the entire lesson. It really got the children thinking and have a positive attitude towards the subject. Each term we are experiments, includi

We have seen an incredible transformation throughout each year group. For us it’s not just about how excited they are for the lesson, but how their attitude towards discovery and

knowledge has evolved. They want to learn more about each module and aren’t afraid to ask questions.

Our teachers are delighted with the introduction of Empiribox. Having the lesson plans, learning resources and training means they are able to deliver the science curriculum with confidence, bringing awe and wonder to the lesson. The children are highly engaged in the lessons and the teachers know they are receiving high science teaching.

covers two lessons and so one week the teacher will demonstrate and discuss the topic and then the next week the children get involved with the practical side using the Plan, Record and Evaluate method.

Teachers also have the flexibility to put their own spin on lessons and the work involved. Empiribox stress the importance of teachers using the correct science terminology and vocabulary. This means the children get used to hearing these words and are then able to use them correctly.

understanding of learning using assessments which are provided by Empiribox.

We are currently in discussion with a local university who are interested in researching different approaches to teaching science and how we can measure the impact of teaching science in this way. It would be really interesting to see the results from this.

Howdo you think other schools could benefit fromthisway of learning?

How do you think other schools could benefit from this way of learning?

Having a ‘lesson in a box’ could help all schools, big or small, especially if resources are limited and also assist primary teachers who do not feel confident in delivering science lessons

This way of learning not only ensures you are meeting the curriculum, but also developing the children’s scientific way of thinking and helping to further their prospects. In addition, it creates excitement and makes learning fun which is important for everyone.

As a whole, how would you change the way science is taught in primary schools? I think there needs to be more emphasis on practical lessons. This is when you really capture the children’s imagination and they learn without really realising it - making it seem less like school! For science, the National Curriculum requires an understanding of scientific methods and applying scientific principles to everyday life, rather than just acquiring facts. I think this is really important so children realise why they are being taught this and how this is relevant to situations outside of the classroom.

As awhole, howwould you change theway science is taught in primary schools?

With Empiribox, it helps to expand and enrich our children’s knowledge whilst meeting the National Curriculum and supporting STEM education which is vital for furthering their prospects later in life.
