CALETA GAMING

Getting to know: Caleta Gaming

Matt Broughton sat with Caleta Gaming’s CEO, David Marcus, and learnt all he needed to know…

C

aleta Gaming was founded more than five years ago, back in 2013, and the three founding members are still at the heartbeat of the company today. As CEO of the business, as well as managing everything commercial, David Marcus oversees the running of Caleta Gaming with Fabiola Jaeger. Fabiola also takes care of all products, including sound, art and maths. Paulo Nova, Caleta CTO, takes care of everything technical from coding through to game integration. Prior to setting up Caleta, all three founders were immersed in both the gaming sector and software development. Paulo is also accredited as the first game designer to have graduated in Latin America from the University Anhembi Morumbi, São Paulo, and was the winner of a 2006 competition called Jogos BR, succeeding in the Best Game Demo category. “Together, we are a robust management team always striving to deliver to best practice,” says CEO, David Marcus, “Over the years, we have added to the team but have always been very selective with who we bring on board. We have grown from the founders to a team of exceptional and multi-talented programmers, artists, sound designers, QA specialists and mathematicians, all with an amazing passion for games.”

Caleta operates out of two offices. The Brazil office is in beautiful Florianopolis, the second largest City in the State of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Aside from having over 40 beaches, it is much more than a holiday destination; it has become a strong and mature technology hub, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of Brazil. “We recently moved to new offices to accommodate our growing team,” explains

Marcus. “Everything technical and design comes out of that office with our London site being the commercial hub for the business.” Caleta’s business model today has changed significantly since it first began. Working with a major operator, the initial product offering was for the social casino market and a Latin American focused app called Brasingo. The game is still available today and what’s more, it provided a great learning curve for the business.

“Today, our business model looks a lot different and has been shaped by our clients requesting real money gaming content with a focus on slots, video bingo, keno and lotto,” says Marcus.

CIO: You speak about aiming to deliver “the most innovative and engaging games around”; how easy is it to achieve that in such a busy marketplace and what approach do you think makes you unique in the sector?

We are pushing the boundaries with our ability to pivot and try something new

David Marcus: Add £10 to your account, select a slot and hit the ‘spin’ button and see what happens. You’ve played one slot, you’ve pretty much played them all, right? Wrong. Players who frequently play slots do have their favorites, based on factors that go well beyond how often the game pays off. So that $64,000 question: “what sets apart one slot from another?” What makes the game such a hit might surprise some, but it’s largely about math. Slot games are designed around mathematical formulas that determine the frequency and size of payouts. High- volatility games are built on formulas that generate massive but infrequent payoffs. Low-volatility games yield smaller payoffs but on a more regular basis. Caleta has spent years researching and playing games as well as learning about player behaviour. Combining this knowledge with our experience, we are creating games that make a difference. Many players are so eager to get started with their slots gaming sessions that they simply make a deposit and play as quickly as possible. We want our players to also enjoy the experience, and our team of artists, animators and sound designers take this to heart to ensure that each creative element of the game, theme and respective sound is so accurate you can get immersed in the game. A perfect example of immersive gaming is our game Hidden Kingdom. This game is based on the Mayans, once the most advanced civilizations in the Americas. After studying the history of the Mayans and knowing that they mastered many things including their towering
