KA3 Small scale, big ideas


The Building Centre has announced the first wave of talks for Small Scale Big Ideas, its month-long exhibition and public programme. Taking place throughout May 2026, the event brings together architects, engineers and makers whose work centres on the home. Small Scale Big Ideas is an exhibition and talks programme in equal measure: a sustained exploration of what architecture can achieve when working with intelligence, care and conviction at a small scale. TALKS PROGRAMME INCLUDES: • Rodić Davidson Architects Unlocking Site Potential Using design to invent what does not yet exist Siniša Rodić and Elizabeth Cox present Seven Apartments – and the bespoke privacy glazing system developed by the design team from scratch to solve challenges of light, privacy and heritage. A reflection on twenty years of practice and the discipline of invention. • Francisco Gomes – Gomes + Staub Architects COMPACT: On Building Small in a Big Land Two compact homes in Austin and Asheville, and the argument for smallness as beauty, sustainability and urban strategy in contemporary America. • Russian For Fish Live. Work. Live-Work Pereen d’Avoine and Nilesh Shah trace the dissolving boundary between home and workplace, from individual residential projects through to twelve years of live-work development at Ashby Mews, Brockley – a model for sustaining creative communities and urban making. • Kashdan Brown Architects Get Dense Julian and Julia Kashdan-Brown make the case for densifying Britain’s suburbs through thoughtful backland development – and challenge the trend towards mass timber construction with a rigorous argument for the monolithic clay block wall. • Studio Bark & U-Build Self-Build for the Circular Economy A retrospective on the development of U-Build – a self-build construction system designed for the circular economy – using the Nest House as a case study. • Pierre d’Avoine The House that Bond Built Peter Bond and the Wates House at CAT A talk marking the 50th anniversary of the Wates House – the first new-build at the Centre for Alternative Technology, and widely regarded as the most environmentally significant house ever built in the UK. Built in 1976, it predated Passivhaus by fifteen years. Pierre d’Avoine worked with Peter Bond in the mid-1970s and brings both personal and historical insight to a building whose ideas feel more urgent than ever.
