Choosing the Best Radiators for Every Application
Radiators remain a popular and reliable heating solution across all building types, even as low temperature heating
We explore key considerations in choosing the best radiators that balance performance, compliance, comfort and design.
Consider the environment The first step in radiator selection is understanding the type of building and, more precisely, the specific room or application. Not all radiators are suitable for every environment, and this initial assessment quickly narrows the options. In schools and healthcare, safety and hygiene are critical so low surface temperature (LST) radiators are the obvious choice because they meet both NHS Estates Health Guidance Notes and the Education (School Premises) Regulations. Designs with smooth flat surfaces also support strict cleaning regimes and help reduce dust buildup. In contrast, hotels place a greater emphasis on guest comfort and experience. Here, radiators must respond effectively to fluctuating temperature demands while fitting seamlessly into the interior design. In high-rise buildings, electric radiators are a sustainable, cost-effective and energy- efficient solution. They are increasingly specified as a primary option thanks to their high efficiency and compatibility with renewable energy. Even within a single building, different rooms can vary significantly. Bathrooms may combine underfloor heating with towel warmers for comfort and practicality, while hallways and communal areas can benefit from designer radiators that double as visual features. Kitchens and living spaces
increasingly use low-temperature radiators to provide even warmth that complements modern heat sources.
New build versus renovation Another important factor is whether the project is a new build or a renovation. In new build, the heating system can be designed holistically from the outset considering the building envelope, insulation levels, and the planned low temperature heat source such as a heat pump. This offers more flexibility in radiator selection and placement. Renovation projects, by contrast, often involve working within existing constraints. The building envelope may be less well insulated, and the heat source might remain unchanged, at least initially. In such cases, selecting radiators that can deliver sufficient heat at lower system temperatures can help future-proof the installation and support gradual upgrades.
Matching radiators to interior style The range of radiators available today is broader than ever. Traditional panel radiators remain popular due to their efficiency and versatility, while towel warmers are a bathroom staple. Vertical radiators provide an effective solution where wall space is limited, and designer radiators offer striking shapes, finishes and colours without sacrificing performance. Radiator choice now plays a clear role in interior design. With extensive options in size, colour and style, it is possible to select
models that complement classic, minimalist or contemporary interiors, ensuring the heating system enhances rather than detracts from the overall design.
Getting the size right Correct sizing is essential to ensure radiators meet the room’s heat demand at the system’s operating temperature. Proper dimensioning delivers consistent comfort while avoiding unnecessary energy use and higher running costs. Heat output calculators are valuable tools in this process (see Myson’s website). In larger spaces, combining multiple radiators or integrating them with other heat emitters, such as underfloor heating, can be an effective approach. This allows more compact emitters to be used while ensuring even heat distribution and sufficient total output.
Whole-system approach While selecting the right radiator is important, it is only one part of an efficient heating system. Optimal performance depends on properly aligning heat emitters, heat generation and controls. At Myson, the focus is on a system- wide approach rather than individual components. By prioritising system design and integration, we can provide a complete future-proof heating solution which delivers reliable, sustainable indoor climate comfort for years to come.
