The fact that both technology and people’s taste move on relentlessly is clearly illustrated when you consider that the humble Ford Cortina was Britain’s best- selling car in the mid-Seventies, while cassette players and the notoriously dangerous steam pressure cookers have since been amongst the household items to have virtually disappeared from our lives: for very good reasons. However, some straightforward yet basically ingenious and durable products have survived unchanged and show no signs
of ever going out of fashion. Back in October 1975 when the Bay City Rollers’ Bye Bye Baby and Fawlty Towers were considered top entertainment, Werner Schlüter, the founder of Schlüter- Systems was granted a registration certificate for an innovative tile edge protection to facilitate and subsequently protect the edges of ceramic floor tiles. Conjured up in response to a problem that his work as a Master Tiler had presented, Schlüter-SCHIENE was truly the result of a lightbulb moment which –
although the German based manufacturer has periodically enhanced the range – has never been superseded. In fact, the metal profile has proved that imitation remains the sincerest form of flattery, with the original range of five perforated SCHIENE brass profiles having spawned countless competitors across the market.
