Widthwise 2024

SUPPLIERS SPEAK UP

Mike Horsten,

Senior press manager DPC, Agfa

Over half of the Widthwise 2024 respondents (52%) are very optimistic about their business over the next two years (only 4% are at all pessimistic).

Over half (53%) expect the wide-format market to grow over that period (only 6% expect it to shrink).

Do you expect the UK’s wide-format print market is set to grow, and if so, how do you expect this to translate within your own business?

Q1 Q2

AI is getting a lot of attention. In the Widthwise poll, over half (54%) said they expect it to have a significant impact on the

wide-format print sector in the next two years, yet only 4% said they would be investing in it during that timeframe. What’s your take on that?

External factors such as elections, holiday times etc., if not taken in consideration in the research, give a false illusion of what is going on in the market. Just take Q1 2024 - we believed that the uptrend from the end of 2023 would continue. Unfortunately, the reality was different. The UK grand- and large-format business will grow though, and there is a need for replacement of some of the technologies currently installed. Hardware is important, but with new inksets that are more sustainable - PFAS free, CMR free - the inks are starting to become more important too. How much in is needed per sqm, or how good is the ink when it comes to gamut, smell and VOC’s.

AI is an upcoming technology and we see this as a huge potential for sign-makers to upscale their production. AI in workflows, giving real time trends in the production, AI in the robotisation of the production, and AI in the buying of raw materials are the first main items we will all see appearing. In the printers, we will see better cleaning and preemptive maintenance features appearing.
