Installation supports hotel’s net zero status
Radisson Hotel Manchester City Centre has installed Carrier Commercial HVAC’s AQUASNAP 61AQ heat pumps, becoming the fi rst UK hotel to adopt this system and strengthening its position as a Verifi ed Net Zero hotel. The installation consists of four 120 kW modular units, providing a combined 480kW of heating capacity, which were positioned on the hotel rooftop. The design was developed by [PS] K Design and installed by Nationwide Air Conditioning, integrating the new heat pumps with the existing heating infrastructure while minimising disruption to the operational hotel. The AquaSnap 61AQ units use
natural refrigerant R-290, which has ultra-low global warming potential, and
feature inverter-driven compressors and variable-speed fans to adjust output according to real-time demand. This allows the system to exceed Ecodesign effi ciency standards by up to 30% while operating 10 dB(A) below regulatory noise limits. The heat pumps connect to Carrier’s Abound HVAC Performance platform, providing remote monitoring, diagnostics, and predictive maintenance, enabling the hotel’s facilities team to optimise energy use and plan service interventions. By replacing or retrofi tting parts
of the existing heating system, the installation reduces reliance on gas, improves energy effi ciency and maintains consistent guest comfort. The project illustrates the application of low-carbon, modular heat pump technology in a live hospitality environment, supporting the hotel’s long-term sustainability and energy management goals. ■

irreplaceable records, Belvoir Castle previously tried commercial dehumidifi ers with little success. Munters was then selected to design a dehumidifi cation solution tailored to the unique challenges of the castle.
The installation uses Munters’ industrial dehumidifi er units. The archive rooms contain books, maps, manuscripts and estate records, some dating back to the early 12th century, which had shown signs of deterioration such as mould growth, yellowing, and discolouration due to fl uctuating relative humidity. Five units were installed, each serving
an individual archive room. They have been confi gured to maintain a consistent relative humidity between 50 and 55%, a level in line with British Standard BS4971 for archive conservation. The positioning of the units took into account the castle’s thick walls, which infl uence air circulation and moisture distribution. By stabilising the environment, the dehumidifi ers can help prevent further damage to the documents while reducing the need for supplementary heating. The system provides a focused approach to managing the unique environmental
challenges of historic archive spaces. ■

Sensor-operated taps and urinals save resources in London hotel

Control upgrade reduces gas use at manufacturing site
YLEM ENERGY, a renewable power generation specialist, has partnered with Gestamp, a global manufacturer of metal automotive components, to install a smart heating control system. The installation, powered by YLEM Energy’s E-magine Control platform, has reduced Gestamp’s gas consumption by 2 GWh per year, translating into annual savings of £173,000. The system integrates with the
factory’s existing gas-fi red radiant tube heating infrastructure, replacing manual operation with automated zone-based

control. Each heating zone is now managed by dedicated controllers linked to indoor temperature sensors, which monitor conditions continuously and switch heating on or off according to real- time demand. The system operates with two setpoints, one for occupied periods and another for unoccupied hours, and allows for customised schedules and exception overrides. Since implementation, the smart
control system has improved heating consistency across the factory while reducing reliance on manual monitoring. The solution also contributes to Gestamp’s broader energy effi ciency and sustainability objectives by optimising gas use and maintaining stable environmental conditions for employees without compromising comfort or
operational workfl ow. ■

A major bathroom refurbishment at the Radisson RED London Heathrow has been completed with signifi cant improvements in water effi ciency, hygiene and user experience – supported by the specifi cation of CISTERMISER infrared sensor taps and urinal control solutions. The refurbishment covered all 250
en-suite bathrooms and communal washrooms, to enhance sustainability while maintaining guest comfort. Cistermiser’s technology was selected to manage water usage more eff ectively.
In the en-suite areas, ceiling-
mounted Sensazone motion sensors control the water supply, activating it only when the space is occupied and shutting it off shortly after vacancy. Infrared mains-fed taps were installed alongside these sensors, providing
hands-free operation, limiting fl ow duration to two seconds when not continuously used, and reducing fl ow rates to as low as 1.89 litres per minute. In communal areas, Easyfl ush
Direct urinal control valves were installed. These WRAS-approved devices connect directly to the mains water supply and use infrared sensors to trigger fl ushing on demand. The system reduces water waste, eliminates cistern maintenance, and prevents false activations in high-traffi c areas. Early post-installation monitoring suggests the refurbishment has cut water consumption in refurbished areas by up to 70%, supporting both operational effi ciency and compliance with UK water regulations and BREEAM
environmental standards. ■
