ENERGY IN HOSPITALS & HEALTHCARE
Intelligent lighting retrofit reshapes energy use
Evelina London Children’s Hospital, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, has implemented a major lighting upgrade in collaboration with SOLARCROWN COMMERCIAL to significantly reduce energy consumption while maintaining clinical operational standards. The project replaces legacy fluorescent lighting with high-efficiency LED luminaires supported by a wireless control system. The previous lighting setup operated at a constant output across clinical, operational and public areas, with limited ability to respond to occupancy or daylight conditions. This created a steady energy demand that could not be reduced through conventional scheduling approaches. The new system introduces sensor-
based controls that adjust lighting levels according to real-time usage patterns. This allows lighting to operate only where it is required, while still meeting healthcare lighting standards such as CIBSE LG2 and HTM 06-01. The installation also incorporates automated emergency lighting testing aligned with BS5266 requirements, reducing the need for manual checks and centralising

emissions and resilience A £5.9m project to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy resilience is underway at Ealing Hospital in London. The work is expected to cut carbon emissions by around 900 tonnes per year and deliver financial savings of over £260K per year.

compliance reporting. The project is expected to reduce electricity use for lighting by around 80%, with associated carbon savings of approximately 240 tonnes in the first year. The system is also projected to deliver a return on investment within four years, supported by reduced energy consumption and lower maintenance demands. ▄

general hospital in Southall, run by London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. The Trust is working with VITAL ENERGI to design and install the major infrastructure upgrade needed to reduce emissions. At the heart of the scheme is a 1MW
air-to-water heat pump system, designed to meet the fluctuating heating and cooling demands of a hospital environment. The cascading configuration of the heat pumps ensures enhanced reliability and redundancy, which is critical for maintaining stable
conditions in sensitive areas such as operating theatres and intensive care units.
The project also includes a rooftop
solar installation of more than 200 panels, alongside the replacement of gas boilers with lower temperature hot water systems designed with future heat network integration in mind. Jack Tasker, account manager at Vital
Energi, says: “This project not only supports the Trust’s journey to net zero, but also enhances energy resilience and patient comfort, two critical factors in a healthcare setting. We are integrating advanced technologies like heat pumps, solar photovoltaic panels and smart monitoring at Ealing Hospital. This will create a much more sustainable and efficient environment for staff, patients, and visitors.” ▄

Green Plans For Blue Lights
With ambitious Net Zero targets for the NHS to reduce operational emissions and show measurable progress under their Green Plans...
Progress starts not with assumption, but with accurate measurement.
With precision Energy data loggers you can measure energy consumption to identify inefficiencies from plant-level down to individual equipment.
Rather than relying on assumption, you can deliver targeted upgrades or optimisations where it will yield the greatest impact.
