Feature: Embedded
need not be daunting, complex or demanding. Far from it, it can actually be educational, rewarding and fun.
Matter example Here’s an example of how to get started with Matter over Thread light, using Silicon Labs hardware and software.
1. Understanding the hardware platforms The starting point is the development boards. Here we use a Silicon Labs EFR32xG24 multiprotocol processor, which allows the development of IEEE 802.15.4-based networks like Thread. It also supports Bluetooth, which is used by Matter during commissioning. The primary board for this task would be Pro Kit, which allows different radio boards to be swapped on and off, allowing the evaluation of parts. The main advantage
is that it provides enhanced power and network analysis. It also has an Ethernet connector, making it easier to do large network testing. There is also a range of development
kit boards that can help with the task, which feature sensors like gyroscopes and microphones, designed for rapid prototyping of device applications. They also feature a quick connector to link to many available third-party hardware devices that have the same connector. An entry-level board – the Explorer kit – features a couple of buttons and LEDs, with the possibility of expanding its capability by using the microbus and quick connectors.
2. Adding the Matter extension to the Simplicity Studio IDE Simplicity Studio is the unified development environment for all
Silicon Labs technologies, SoCs and modules. Once it is set up and running, the first step is to install an SDK (software development kit) for the devices you want to work with, by connecting the device to a PC using a USB cable and clicking the install button on the toolbar. The auto option will install the recommended development packages for the connected board, followed by the installation of the required SDK files. Support for Matter development is provided through an SDK extension. Here, you can select the SDK’s tab, and under the Gecko SDK 32-bit and wireless MCUs, click the Install button for the Silicon Labs Matter extension. Once installed, you are ready to start creating Matter applications. To create applications, it is quick and
easy to select a connected device, and you can also access supporting manuals. You can also view additional documentation
