Empowering manufacturing professionals
obotics applications are making their way into each and every aspect of manufacturing, requiring employees to keep up with the rate of digital change. But the skills gap is a persistent issue for the sector, with 85 per cent of manufacturing organisations struggling to recruit the workers they need. Too many organisations are fighting for the few experts available in the field. Instead, as Visual Components explain in this issue on page 36, organisations
R
need to look at how their employees can be upskilled to make best use of advanced automation and robotics by leveraging solutions such as simulation software. It is only via a technology-driven approach that manufacturers can hit their business objectives, improve productivity and achieve operational excellence. This issue also includes: Automation & Robotics; Generators, Backup Power & Batteries; Loading Bays &
Doors; Machinery & Machine Safety; Skills & Training; and Temporary Buildings. If you have a comment, opinion or story that you would like to share, please contact me by emailing

SPILLARD PRESSES BUTTON ON RECRUITMENT DRIVE AFTER £200,000 MOVE INTO NEW HQ
O
ne of the West Midlands’ fastest growing manufacturers has invested more than £200,000
into a new headquarters in Four Ashes. Spillard Safety Systems, which supplies
safety equipment for the commercial vehicle, construction, HS2, plant and quarry sectors, has moved into the 28,500 sq ft facility - treble the size of its former site. The company’s ‘Safety Hub’ now has more
warehousing space, a dedicated R&D unit for product
development and an eight-bay commercial vehicle workshop that will cater for a 30 per cent increase in installs scheduled for this year. Led by brothers Pete and Craig Spillard, the business has also just pressed the button on a major recruitment drive that will see it look to employ a further twelve engineers and three additional apprentices. This is intended to help develop the next generation of engineers.

S Smith has collaborated with Versuni, home to some of the
world’s most renowned domestic appliance brands, to produce and deliver 100 per cent recycled and recyclable packaging solutions. The new boxes are made with 100
per cent recycled paper with durability for transportation. This sustainable packaging will be extended across Versuni’s Phillips home appliance global product portfolio and will initially be applied to Versuni’s top performing Phillip’s products. Versuni will then expand this to encompass its full Phillips portfolio globally. DS Smith is also working with
Versuni to replace single-use protection buffers (EDF) plastics inside the packaging with sustainable fibre-based packaging alternatives.
