NEW TOOL IMPROVES CUSTOMER OUTCOMES WITH EFFICIENT TROUBLESHOOTING FOR KENTER


W


ith Kenter constantly looking at ways to improve the service it provides to its customers; an innovative handheld tool has enabled the company to transform the speed and accuracy of the scheduled maintenance it undertakes. Kenter is part of Alliander, the biggest network operator in the Netherlands. It provides energy and innovative measurement solutions for a wide range of businesses, from small family run bakeries to chemical multinationals, from data centres owned by a large software company to global electric vehicle manufacturers among its 30,000 plus customers. The company’s two main services are: * energy supplies: collaborating with customers to make sure their medium voltage installations work reliably and safely. Kenter also instals, rents and maintains medium voltage installations. * measurement services: Kenter uses metres and secure applications such as Meetdata.nl to measure and provide insight into its customers’ energy consumption, which is crucial when companies are


looking to optimise energy consumption to help tackle climate change. Kenter offers a team of three hundred specialists who work around the clock to keep their customers’ operations online. This includes a team of field engineers who are responsible for ensuring their customers receive a safe and reliable power supply. “Our customers are from a diverse range of industries and of varied sizes, but they all have one thing in common—they all need power to run their operations,” says Dirk Kwik, team manager service and maintenance at Kenter. “With that in mind, our engineers are focused on identifying issues and undertaking maintenance quickly and safely to minimise disruption to our customers’ businesses.”


Scheduled Maintenance Part of Kenter’s support package to its customers are scheduled maintenance cycles, typically every three-, five-, six- or 10-years dependent on requirements to ensure smooth operations. During scheduled


maintenance, Kenter looks to coordinate a series of works to minimise customer disruption. This includes checking for partial discharge.


Partial discharge is an electrical discharge that does not completely bridge the space between two conductors and can occur in medium and high voltage electrical equipment. The phenomenon occurs around insulation on pieces of equipment such as high voltage lines, transformers, turbines, bus-bars inside of cabinets, etc. The issue is commonly found at electricity generation facilities, transmission networks, and distribution grids. There are four types of discharge usually found in medium and high voltage electrical systems: * Arching discharge: a prolonged electrical discharge produced by the electrical breakdown of a gas. * Corona discharge: Corona discharge occurs when discharge is directly into the air emanating from the sharp surface of the conductor. * Surface discharge: a discharge that travels along
