appy New Year! Welcome to the first issue of Factory and Handling Solutions for 2020. This year is set to be a busy one for the UK, with the new majority Conservative government aiming to ‘get Brexit done’ and reform our NHS, which we know by now are easier said than done.

As an industry we are still in a state of uncertainty, October 2019 saw many manufacturers stock piling materials ahead of a possible no deal, and saw factories suffer a sixth consecutive month of a fall in orders. With no definite answers to how the industry will be further effected and what - or if - the Brexit deal will be, it’s impossible for 

In this issue we focus on Food & Beverages, with comment from Phil Brown at Fortress Technology Europe, who takes a look at how to avoid metal contamination in ready meal production, and the new challenges faced with changing consumer demand. Electro Mechanical Systems explore the robotic trends set to appear through the year ahead in our Industry 4.0 feature, including cobots in the workplace, medical robots and robots in agriculture. Adem Kulauzovic of Domino Printing Services shares with us how to achieve maximum efficiency in coding and marking with coding automation and talks us through not just surviving, but thriving during the evolution of Industry 4.0.

Page 26 Combilift’s AisleMaster provides the solution for Higgidy’s ingredients, and on page 28 Yale and Briggs Equipment help Marstons keep a firm grip on its stock. Graham Sharp, managing director of Stanley Handling looks at the connections between workplace safety and wellbeing and its productivity and profit, looking at claims that mental health issues cost UK employers £42 billion per year.

On page 44 we delve into Empack 2020 to see what’s in store for visitors on the 26th and 27th February, co-located alongside Packging Innovations, Label&Print and Contract Pack & Fulfilment. On page 46 we preview the Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2020 show, giving you all the information you need about exhibitors and new product launches to help you plan your trip.

I hope you enjoy our first issue of the year, as ever if there is anything you feel we should be covering or that you would like to see, please send an email to rtucker@datateam.co.uk
