TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION 10th major Archie award for Combilift
Combilift, the Irish manufacturer of a wide range of handling solutions, has won its 10th prestigious industry award from the Forklift Truck Association for one of its latest products.
The 2020 FLTA Awards for Excellence took place virtually on Saturday 10th April, having been postponed from last year due to Covid. The recently introduced Combi-CBE model - the world’s first counterbalance design, multidirectional forklift with electric drive on all of its three wheels, was one of the twelve finalists in the hotly contested Innovation Category. According to the host of this year’s Awards, “this is the category that everyone wants to win, as you get to feel incredibly clever.” So Combilift was immensely proud that the jury singled it out as the outright winner. The Combi-CBE features internationally patented electric
traction which enables independent control of each of the front and rear drive wheels and guarantees 100% traction control, which negates the need for differential lock when it is operating on wet or slippery surfaces. As the truck drives and steers, the speed and rotational direction of the wheels are controlled independently. Operators benefit from precise acceleration and deceleration control, which significantly reduces long load momentum twisting when travelling sideways. Each electric drive incorporates parking and regenerative dynamic braking for power efficiency and AC drive means that there are no mechanical brushes to maintain or replace.

Union Industries supplies and installs 40 rapid-roller doors at Princes food production site
Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-speed industrial doors, has completed one of its largest individual projects with the supply and installation of 40 of its rapid-roller doors at Princes Group UK’s (Princes) food production site in Long Sutton. Having supplied Princes with more than 100 high-speed industrial doors across seven of its
sites since 2010, Leeds-based Union Industries has installed a further 40 rapid-roller doors at its Long Sutton site near Spalding in Lincolnshire. An international food and drink group, Princes is involved in the manufacture, import and
distribution of branded and customer own brand products. Princes’ brands and products span over 20 different categories, including fish, meat, fruit, vegetables, soups, pastes, pasta, cooking sauces, edible oils and a wide range of soft drinks sectors. Princes is currently engaging in an £80m investment programme at its Long Sutton facility – the
company’s largest food production site in the UK – providing state-of-the-art equipment, better energy efficiency and increased production as part of its long-term commitment to UK manufacturing. A multi-temperature facility with ambient, chilled and frozen environments, Princes’ extension of
the Long Sutton site commanded an additional investment of 40 of Union’s fast-action roller doors. Union installed a selection of rapid-rise doors from its market-leading range, including small
internal Lion Doors for pedestrian and pallet traffic use, larger internal Matadoors and Bulldoors for forklift truck traffic between ambient and chill areas, heavy duty Ramdoor high-speed doors for external openings, and two of Union’s revolutionary Eiger Doors for cold store applications. Patrick McNamee, Group Project Controller at Princes, said: “Since the first installations
Combining the benefits of very compact dimensions and the ability to handle long loads as
well as pallets, the multidirectional Combi-CBE is a universal truck for multiple applications and offers cost effective and efficient operation. It also answers growing market demand for powerful and quieter electric forklifts which comply with ever more stringent emissions guidelines. The FLTA commented as follows: “a clever and innovative design, Combilift’s entry impressed the panel with its unique, independent front and rear wheel drive, letting it handle long loads in the tightest spaces while minimising tyre wear.” Combilift CEO and co-founder Martin McVicar said: “Innovation is a cornerstone of Combilift’s
product development and, given the large number of excellent finalists this year, we would like to thank the FLTA jury of industry experts for recognising our achievements.”
back in 2010, we have been incredibly impressed by the quality of Union Industries’ doors and the aftersales service we receive from the team is second to none.” Patrick added: “The new investments in Long Sutton total just under £80m, and will improve
the efficient running of the site and enhance product quality and manufacturing controls. Thankfully, with Union Industries’ assistance, we can feel confident that we have the necessary fixtures in place to support and strengthen productivity at the site.” Alan Hirst, Sales Director for Union Industries, said: “This was another large-scale
installation by our team, and one that was delivered on-time, to budget and provided an effective solution for the customer. “Our range of high-speed roller doors are engineered and created to be resilient, long lasting
and to undergo high intensity operations, while being tailored to meet our clients’ individual requirements. In this instance, we worked closely with Princes’ architects and consultants to ensure specifications were matched to each individual application.”
