FEATURE LIGHTING & CONTROL SYSTEMS
LED LIGHTING: QUALITY COMES FIRST
traditional lights, which require re- lamping every two years on average. No re-lamping means no waste, and over time, this can have a hugely positive impact on the environment and waste management in the UK, while saving on maintenance costs. Finally, LED control systems are
designed to be fully sustainable and future-ready from the moment they are installed, as they are based on software that can be updated as technology advances. This means no more unnecessary spending on obsolete technology.
LED lighting is renowned for its energy saving, cost- effective capabilities. Here Nick Farraway, vice president and general manager at Cree LightingEMEA looks at the benefits and how LED is influencing our daily lives

ith its long life and low energy consumption, LED technology has
rapidly become the standard of choice for building managers in the UK. After entering the market in the early 2000’s, there was a rush to adopt LED technology, which led to the import of low-quality LED variants. In such a crowded LED lighting market,
facilities managers and business owners are spoiled for choice, and many are still unaware of the host of benefits that come with installing a genuinely good LED lighting system. Slashing energy bills is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s no secret that LED lighting can
provide unprecedented, long-term energy and cost savings. High-quality LED lighting can deliver up to 70% energy savings compared with traditional lighting, and virtually no maintenance costs. Those who have already invested in LED lighting are beginning to see the long-term cost benefits and a rapid return on investment. In 2013, manufacturing hardware
producer, The Forgital Group, installed Cree LED luminaires across its entire

Italian site, including its warehouse, parking and production sites. Since the upgrade, the annual power consumption of Forgital’s Velo d'Astico site has decreased by 1.3GW per hour, leading to huge energy savings and a one year return on investment. Meanwhile, the London Borough of
Hackney is also steadily reaping the benefits from installing 54 LED luminaires in Shoreditch Park back in 2009. By 2025, these luminaires will save the council £66,000 in maintenance costs alone, while keeping the park a safe place after dark.
AN ECO-FRIENDLY INVESTMENT It’s not just about cutting costs. LED lighting systems also reduce carbon emissions and help businesses and councils hit their sustainability goals. The Forgital Group’s lighting revamp saved the production of 4,000 tons of harmful CO2 and helped keep the air clean for their employees and nearby communities. High-end LED lights also have a
lifespan between 20 to 25 years compared to lower quality LEDs and

SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH LIGHTING CONTROLS A high-quality lighting system also delivers optimal energy efficiency with its lighting controls, which can be adapted to any installation. These controls turn lights on and off automatically and control brightness levels to suit the industrial, working or urban environment based on user preferences. Combined with well-designed fixtures, high quality LEDs are also equipped with an optic system which directs the light only where it is needed, which means that just the right amount of light is emitted without wasting energy or causing discomfort and eye strain. Lighting manufacturers are now taking
the technology a step further by designing custom-made solutions using 3D digital models which can predict how the light will behave in different settings and at different times of day. It is estimated that tailored lighting solutions have improved levels of efficiency up to 85% more than conventional lights. Energy-efficiency is not just about
cutting back on electricity, or reducing carbon emissions, it is also about improving the lives and energy-levels of the people who experience the lighting every day. Enjoying the many benefits of LED
lighting requires a quality system – and the secret is getting out. We have already started to see a rise in demand for quality lighting from people who are all after a brighter and better future at a lower cost.
