SHOW PREVIEW SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING 2018

A new era for the UK’s favourite engineering show

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough from February 6th to 8th 2018 - its 20th anniversary show coinciding with the opening of the UK’s newest exhibition venue and the show’s move into a new permanent home on its traditional Farnborough site. Here’s the latest

and Conference Centre is the largest exhibition venue to be built in the UK for 20 years. The 20,000m² Hall 1 complex, designed by award-winning architects Terence O’Rourke, offers world-class facilities, easy access and panoramic runway level views. Southern Manufacturing & Electronics will be the first major exhibition to be held in the new venue, and for the show itself, a complete transformation of the visitor experience to one of the UK’s most enduring and popular engineering exhibitions. But while the setting may be new, the

format of the show and its core values remain true to its tried-and-tested formula. Around 800 firms are expected to participate for 2018, divided roughly, equally between electronics and manufacturing production. Within these two main genres, the show is further loosely divided into various areas, such as electronics production & test, production hardware, components and materials. However these definitions are not strictly applied and visitors are encouraged to wander freely to discover products and services that they perhaps hadn’t considered before. For those looking for components, the

show offers a fertile hunting ground with pretty much every type of mechanical, electronic and electromechanical component well represented. Major vendors returning for 2018 include igus UK, showcasing various solutions such as energy chain, bearings, linear guides, flexible cables, stock bar and stock plate materials. Igus’ maintenance and lubrication-free products are designed to cut costs and increase the service life of modern machinery, offering many advantages over traditional materials, such as; corrosion, wear, environmental and debris resistance. Another familiar face is Kabelschepp Metool, which will be highlighting its recently launched Master

Tools, Mazak, Matsuura, Bystronic and others, to specialist tooling, workholding, welding, laser marking, labelling and inspection. A diverse range of manufacturing and

drag chains, the LE0 and LE80, designed to meet the demands of Industry 4.0. A new exhibitor for 2018 is Fuji Electric

Europe, a specialist in inverter and energy management for industrial applications, based in Germany and UK. At the show, Fuji Electric will display high performance inverters that offer automatically controlled motor operations for a wide variety of AC drive applications including conveyor systems, pumps, fans, HVAC, lift applications. Visitors to the show will be invited to learn more about reducing overall power and energy consumption, and minimising operating costs.

PRODUCTION HARDWARE The show is also an excellent place to evaluate production hardware from numerous suppliers. Again, the choice is comprehensive and covers everything from the latest machining centres from major vendors such as XYZ Machine

engineering companies rely on nitrogen gas to keep their processes clean and dry. Alongside a range of compressors and vacuum pumps, compressed air specialists BCAS, will be demonstrating the benefits of creating nitrogen in- house. Nitrogen generators allow users to produce a reliable, secure and safe source of nitrogen from an existing compressed air supply, thereby making significant cost savings. The Daylight Company will highlight its aesthetically designed and ergonomically engineered high-end task lighting and magnifiers, which employ the latest SMD LED technology to achieve maximum light output, clarity and high contrast with dimming control for detailed inspection. Along with the thousands of

components on display, Southern Manufacturing is one of the country’s pre-eminent markets for engineering subcontracting. The list of such firms present at Southern 2018 is impressively long and includes names such as Smith & Jewell, Jenks & Cattell, HEC Precision, Jota Advanced Engineering, GW Martin, Machined Precision Components amongst many others. Farnborough’s pivotal position within the UK’s Aerospace sector means that many of the firms exhibiting are AS 9100 rated suppliers capable of the highest quality work. Southern Manufacturing & Electronics

2018 opens from February 6th to 8th. Admission to the show is free. More information and tickets are available on the show website. Farnborough Exhibition and Conference Centre offers free on-site car parking and is easily reached by road, air or public transport.
