Heat pumps: The key to attracting


the younger generation of house buyers?


According to new research1 by sustainable solutions provider, E.ON, the younger generation


are ‘keen for green’ when house hunting and are willing to pay more for homes with sustainable solutions installed. Here the company explains why

ccording to the latest research by E.ON, over three quarters (77%) of Gen Z – those aged


16-27 – say a home with energy solutions such as a heat pump or electric vehicle charger installed is a priority when looking to buy or rent a new home. This is on a par with priorities such as location (85%), access to transportation links (83%) and outdoor space (77%), and shows the importance that the younger generation are putting on sustainable solutions in properties. The research also revealed that almost three


quarters (73%) of Brits aged 16-56 admit they would look elsewhere if a property did not meet the minimum energy efficiency rating required, further demonstrating why homeowners, landlords and property developers should all be considering installing sustainable solutions in their properties.


HEAT PUMPS Heat pumps are one of the sustainable solutions the younger generation are keen on, with over three quarters (78%) saying that heat pumps are an important sustainable energy solution to have installed on a property within the next five years. There are two types of heat pumps – air


source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. Air source heat pumps are the main ones installed in homes across the UK today. However, heat pump technology is developing


all the time and there are a range of heat pumps available on the market to suit different property types2

outside air to provide a home with heating and hot water. They work a little bit like a fridge but in reverse, drawing the air in from the outside, heating it up and transferring it into your central heating system to heat your home and hot water. Despite requiring a small amount of electricity to run, air source heat pumps use this energy much more efficiently than other heating systems. This makes heat pumps a more sustainable option than traditional oil or gas central heating and can help homeowners and businesses become more energy efficient and reduce their carbon footprints. The other main benefit of heat pumps is the


financial savings that can be achieved. The cost to install a heat pump typically start at around £6,000, depending on the type of heat pump you install and the size of your home. But, the annual savings can be considerable, particularly if a household is changing from old-fashioned systems such as storage heaters or oil boiler. Through the new Boiler Upgrade Scheme which


came into place this Spring, the Government is offering homeowners £5,000 towards the cost of a replacing their existing heating system with a

high efficiency heat pump, making heat pumps a more affordable solution for homeowners.

reveals just how important sustainable energy solutions are to the majority of people; and the good news for consumers is that the Government’s forthcoming £5,000 grant for cleaner heating upgrades should help incentivise landlords and property developers to improve their properties for the benefit of their residents and for the planet.”
