PROJECT TO EXPLORE THE VIABILITY OF HYDROGEN FUEL FOR CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
Hydrogen fuel pioneer ULEMCo, Cementation Skanska and the Building Research Establishment (BRE), are working on a project that will produce and evaluate a dual- fuel hydrogen and diesel piling machine. It’s being backed by Government funding from Phase 1 of the Red Diesel Replacement programme, part of the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) under the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Named ZECHER for ‘Zero Carbon Hydrogen Construction Equipment for Real-world
use’, the project will provide a proof of concept for converting on-site construction equipment. It will deliver the physical conversion of the rig, as well as exploring the viability of hydrogen fuel for construction site decarbonisation. The trial is being carried out on a Soilmec SR30 rotary and CFA piling rig at Cementation
Skanska’s facility in South Yorkshire. The rig, with its Cummins QSB6.7 engine, is a medium-sized one used in construction. Machines like these can typically use 100 litres of diesel per day of operation, leading to 262kg CO2 emissions. Decarbonising
such machines will support the construction sector on its journey to achieving net-zero carbon by 2050. While the test will be undertaken on a piling rig, ZECHER will use the findings to explore the opportunities
for using hydrogen to reduce carbon and significantly improve air quality for a range of heavy-duty, non-road machinery typically used in the early stages of large infrastructure construction projects. “The UK construction sector uses around 1bn litres of fuel annually, generating about 2.7m tonnes of CO2, and
therefore finding ways to decarbonise the sector is critical to delivering the UK’s targets for net zero”, said Ranjit Bassi of BRE. “BRE’s role in the project is to look across the sector and to help accelerate the transition to clean fuels. Hydrogen looks to be one of the only currently viable routes to doing this in the available timescale.”

HYDROGEN UPS SYSTEM DRAMATICALLY CUTS MEDICAL CENTRE OPERATING COSTS
In collaborating with Israel fuel cell manufacturer, GenCell, ABB has installed a hydrogen-based Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system at the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Israel. The breakthrough fuel cell backup technology is guaranteed to keep the power on 24/7 for critical life-saving equipment and procedures. According to the company, the use of hydrogen will reduce the hospital’s environmental impact and cut operating costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars. The centre invested in hydrogen-based backup to reduce its dependence on diesel generators. So, ABB and
GenCell developed a bespoke solution which incorporates GenCell fuel cell modules and ABB’s advanced, high- efficiency, UPS technology to form one of the most reliable, efficient hydrogen stationary systems of its kind. goals and improves power supply reliability in the hospital. Moving to a GenCell hydrogen-powered backup solution, the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center now has a reliable power supply 24/7 which will keep patients safe, decarbonise its operations and reduce costs to operate. GOVERNMENT ENDORSES A ‘HYDROGEN FUTURE’
In a debate on the potential for hydrogen and a new HyNet Hydrogen Village trial at Whitby near Ellesmere Port, running alongside the Hy4Heat programme, the Rt Hon George Freeman, Parliamentary Under- Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, welcomed the trials as a vital first step towards gathering the necessary evidence for a wider roll-out. Commenting on this, he said: “The
BEIS-funded Hy4Heat programme has shown that the use of 100% hydrogen can be made as safe as natural gas when used for heating and cooking in the types of houses that were studied.” In response to this, Mike Foster,
chief executive of the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA), said: “The government’s endorsement of a hydrogen future using our world-class gas distribution network is a tribute to the hard work of the heating industry in developing hydrogen technologies.” Foster also praised the commitment
of boiler manufacturers to provide hydrogen boilers at no greater cost than current technologies – a commitment that was brokered by the EUA. “The Big Four boiler manufacturers price promise was noted by BEIS and has proven to be a decisive factor in the government’s commitment to a hydrogen future. The benefits for the climate, consumers and the heating industry have been made very clear and the government has responded.”
