Aggreko highlights route to achieving ESG aspirations in manufacturing
With many manufacturers lacking the resources necessary to achieve ESG targets, sector specialist Aggreko is highlighting how third-party support can help manufacturers circumvent industry challenges and embrace more sustainable practices. A recent report from Make UK and Lloyds Bank indicated that 77% of firms are now receiving ESG requests from their customers. As such, the number of firms setting ESG targets has increased by 48%, with two-thirds of manufacturers doing so since 2021. However, with the report also indicating that less than half of manufacturers have the resources required to meet ESG requirements, Ruth Martin, manufacturing sector manager at Aggreko UK & Ireland, is calling attention to how leveraging third-party expertise can help businesses realise these aspirations. Ms Martin said: “It’s fantastic to see that so
many manufacturers are beginning to take a serious stance on sustainability, with firm ESG targets now in place. That said, achieving these will be another challenge unto itself, not least with the
ongoing challenges that are plaguing the sector at present. ““Supply chain delays, skill shortages, and production difficulties are all ongoing challenges that are at loggerheads with business’ ESG aspirations, and are preventing them from realising these goals. However, there are viable routes forward if manufacturers look to alternative procurement strategies.” At present, many manufacturers are still using
ageing, inefficient equipment, which in turn has a negative impact on their carbon footprint. Capex limitations, supply chain delays, and a lack of in-house skills have all been commonly cited as barriers to investment in newer technology.
XPO Logistics expands longer semi-trailer fleet in UK & Ireland
XPO has introduced 30 additional longer semi- trailer fleet (LST) vehicles in the UK and Ireland while reducing CO2e emissions by almost 1,000 tonnes or 7 million kilograms annually. The specialised LSTs boost capacity by 180% compared to a single deck trailer, improving operational efficiency and environmental performance. This represents a further significant step towards XPO’s aim of carbon neutrality. Dan Myers, managing director – UK and
Ireland, XPO Logistics, said: “We’re finding ways of improving our environmental performance
through rigour, challenge and partnership. Step by step, we are decarbonising our customer’s supply chains.” Mr Myers said that XPO Logistics is a leading
innovative supply chain company in Europe, offering end-to-end logistics solutions that combine full-truckload, less-than-truckload, pallet distribution, last-mile delivery, global freight forwarding, and warehousing services. “We tailor our solutions to the specific needs of its customers in a wide range of industrial and consumer sectors,” he added.
Altus adds MagicRay through- hole inspection to product line-up
Altus Group has added to its product line-up with MagicRay’s latest innovation in inspection, the V320 THT Pre-Reflow AOI system. The V320 is specifically designed for through- hole technology (THT) assembly processes and will enable comprehensive inspection capabilities for electronics manufacturers utilising THT components on their printed circuit boards. Many companies still rely significantly on through-hole assembly, with skilled operators manually placing components before wave, selective or robotic soldering. This process risks human errors like component defects and solder faults. The MagicRay V320 THT AOI system addresses these quality challenges with intelligent pre-reflow optical inspection. The V320 features a large field-of-view to
efficiently inspect assemblies. Its dual-sided inspection capability allows it to examine both the top and bottom sides of boards for any defects.
The system leverages AI-based programming and big data learning algorithms to accurately identify component polarity and automatically classify component types for detecting missing, incorrectly oriented, or misplaced parts as well as solder defects like bridging or insufficient joint formation with their other post reflow solutions. Jiri Kucera, operations director at Altus Group,
said: “Many companies still populate a significant number of through-hole components manually, which increases the risk of human errors and defects.
“Whether customers need to detect polarity
issues, missing components, or just want to increase traceability, the V320 provides a specialised solution to support quality for THT assembly.”
