JOINT EFFORT TO ADVANCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN MANUFACTURING

T he University of

Pittsburgh (Pitt) and the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance research collaboration and knowledge sharing in technology, manufacturing and education across borders. The partnership will see GMIS and

Pitt, in particular its Swanson School of Engineering, collaborate to explore opportunities to encourage research and development in manufacturing,

develop academic papers, and facilitate knowledge exchange between diff erent universities and educational institutes worldwide. The partnership aims to foster cross-sector collaboration through academic research and expertise to address the industry’s challenges. The partnership is designed to further the two organisations’ shared objectives to drive sustainable innovation that will help reshape the global manufacturing landscape, serving economies, industry and society better.

“Pittsburgh represents the intersection of Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0, as indicated when Worth magazine recently named it as the nation’s second-most resilient city. Pittsburgh was the burning heart of the Second Industrial Revolution, and the past three decades of re- invention have shown how our region has once again established itself as the nexus for creating new knowledge that improves the human condition. And as we celebrate the 175th year of engineering education at Pitt in 2021, the Swanson School

PLANS BY INTEL WELCOMED BY IDA IRELAND I

DA Ireland welcomed Intel’s plans to enter a new era of innovation and technology growth with the acceleration of investment in Europe that will see it expand its Irish manufacturing operations. Investment underway in Leixlip Ireland is expected to lead to the creation of 1600 new high-tech jobs on completion.

Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, says that the company’s IDM 2.0 model will pave the way for it to continue

to lead through manufacturing. Since locating its technology campus in Ireland in 1989, Intel has invested $15bn in manufacturing capacity, making it one of the largest and most advanced semiconductor manufacturing operations in Europe. The current expansion, which in time will more than double Intel’s available manufacturing space in Ireland and Europe, has seen an additional $7bn investment between 2019 and 2021.

An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin welcomed the news, saying the company has made an enormous contribution to Ireland: “Intel’s journey in Ireland has been an extraordinary one and these plans for the next phase of its development will enhance its reputation as a global leader in semiconductor innovation and manufacturing. The government’s mission is to get people back to work and rebuild our economy, whilst ensuring that Ireland thrives.

H

ello and welcome to the April edition of Irish Manufacturing. As the usual Editor of Irish Manufacturing, Rachel Tucker, wrote in the last issue, I will be taking over for a bit, until she comes back from maternity leave. So fear not, it’s a temporary arrangement! In this issue, features include Automation/Smart Factory, Warehousing & Materials Handling, Compressed Air, Flow & Level Control, Barcoding, Labelling & Packaging, Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, Pumps & Pumping Systems, and Medical Equipment & Devices. If you are interested in contributing, please get in touch with one of our team.

WRIGHTBUS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE AND THOUSANDS OF JOBS FOR BALLYMENA

W

ightbus will create 3,000 jobs over the next decade alongside developing a centre of excellence for zero-emission technology in Ballymena thanks to £11.2m government funding. The cash injection is part of a £54m investment being coordinated by The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC). Last year Wrightbus launched the world’s fi rst fl eet of hydrogen double-decker buses in Aberdeen, with more planned for major cities including Birmingham and London this year. The news was announced by the

Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, and has been welcomed by Wrightbus Executive Chairman, Jo Bamford, and CEO, Buta Atwal: “The funding is a huge

boost not just for Wrightbus, but for the people of Ballymena and the wider Northern Ireland economy.” “This money is vital to allow us to secure existing jobs and to build a stable future by creating thousands of new ones over the next decade. It is also the key as we look to help the UK achieve its net zero 2050 ambitions.”

“It will allow us to create the next

generation of hydrogen double- and single-decker buses at a larger scale and lower cost than ever before, as well as create a zero- emmission centre of excellence in Ballymena that will not only positively impact the economy, but will benefi t the UK and the world as we create leading new technology to drastically reduce CO2

levels,” he added. / IRISHMANUFACTURING IRISH MANUFACTURING | APRIL 2021 5 N

EBOSH, one of the world’s leading health and safety awarding bodies, has launched a new two-week qualifi cation for the construction sector. Health and Safety Management for Construction will give learners the skills they need to take on health and safety responsibilities.

Laying the foundations for healthier and safer construction sites, qualifi cation holders will also be better able to infl uence their on-site colleagues to work more safely, gaining the confi dence and technical know-how to challenge unsafe behaviours and off er practical solutions.

NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction is available in both UK, Ireland and international variants. The UK version is closely aligned to Construction (Design & Management) (CDM) Regulations whilst the international option references ILO guidance. Whichever option is chosen, the qualifi cation goes beyond legislation to focus on best practice so that learners can develop great health and safety practices.

NEBOSH Chief Operating

Offi cer, Dee Arp, said: “The very hands-on nature of construction sites is refl ected in the new Health and Safety Management for Construction, one of NEBOSH’s most vocational qualifi cations.”

is proud to help lead the way in research, academics and cultural competency,” said James R. Martin II, US Steel Dean of Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering.

“The integration of sustainable industrial development in the mission for GMIS sets a well-charted path for our partnership,” said Dr. David Vorp, the Swanson School’s John A. Swanson, Professor of Bioengineering and Associate Dean for Research at Pitt. “Our faculty and students are exploring new materials and advanced manufacturing.”
