WEG EXTENDS ITS CFW500 VSD SERIES WITH THE ADDITION OF A DRIVE DEDICATED TO PHOTOVOLTAIC APPLICATIONS

W

EG, a global manufacturer of motors and drive technology, has unveiled a new optional kit for its class-

leading CFW500 series of variable speed drives (VSDs) that facilitates pump motor control through photovoltaic (PV) solar cells. The state-of-the-art CFW500 Solar Drive comprises of a plug-in module to simplify set up and installation, complemented by a rich feature set that offers a host of user benefits. WEG‘s compact, energy-saving CFW500 Solar Drive is ideal for the control of centrifugal and submersible motor pumps installed in places where the power grid is unavailable or unreliable. The CFW500 Solar Drive works by converting the DC feed

from PV panels, into AC that is able to serve and control the motor pump. Importantly, the new kit has a function which provides automatic start/stop according to the available solar energy. Principal features of the CFW500 Solar Drive include

continuous maximum power point tracking (MPPT), double PID for simultaneously controlling both DC voltage and pipeline pressure, and up to four distinct speed and pressure setpoints.

EASE OF USE Ease of usability and operability have been considered from original concept. For instance, a counter is included for working hours and generated kWh indication, while a sleep/wake-up function is triggered by DC voltage or pressure within the pipeline. In addition, simple programming is complemented by customisable SoftPLC functions and Modbus-RTU RS485 communication. The CFW500 Solar Drive also offers dry pump protection, as well as safeguarding against over-pressure and broken pipes. A further important feature is that, with the use of a solar

irradiation sensor, it is possible to make use of hybrid power sources, such as solar panels and generator sets. This configuration can help to increase the available operational time during periods of low solar irradiation. With regard to reliability – a vital factor in remote or poorly

served areas – a robust frame facilitates 150 per cent overcurrent for 60 seconds and ambient temperatures up to 50ºC without derating. In addition, the CFW500 Solar Drive features tropicalised electronic boards that enhance the life cycle by protecting the circuit (Class 3C2 of IEC 60721-3-3) in potentially harmful operating environments. The new CFW500 Solar Drive kit extends WEG’s existing

CFW500 range of high-performance VSDs for applications that require speed and torque control of three-phase induction motors. CFW500 VSDs provide sensor-less vector, closed loop vector or scalar V/f (voltage/frequency) control. In addition, the range offers Pump Genius, which adds dedicated functions for pumping systems, and selectable plug-in modules that provide a flexible and optimised solution for any application.

CUSTOM-TAILORED MOTORS FOR SYSTEM INTEGRATORS M

enzel Elektromotoren not only provides electric motors to end users directly, but is also a supplier and partner of

drive manufacturers, distributors, and maintenance companies. The German manufacturer carries a large stock including many unusual motor versions and is highly experienced in customized motor adaptations. Other manufacturers and integrators therefore rely on Menzel as a trusted source. In many cases, Menzel can assist in the short term, if end customers have particularly challenging demands. Many repeated orders are proof of highest quality and reliability. A Canadian system integrator has recently placed its third order: Menzel was to supply a spare motor for a cement plant and had to meet very exacting requirements. The new slipring motor must be able to replace three existing crusher motors in case of a failure. To ensure smooth commissioning at the installation site, which is characterized by very tight space restrictions, Menzel's project manager took the measurements in Canada himself. Menzel chose a 4.5 MW motor from stock, built an extended shaft, and furthermore fitted adapter plates with mounting holes for all three locations as well as brackets for plug and play mounting of vibration sensors for condition monitoring. In addition, the terminal box was fitted with long feeder cables to facilitate the third-party connecting-up.

PMW replicates ServoDisc brushed DC pancake motors for drop-in replacement When a manufacturer of precision motion actuators needed a brushed DC ServoDisc pancake motor that was no longer available from its original manufacturer, Printed Motor Works was asked to produce a drop-in replacement with an identical specification. It needed to have the same electrical performance and mechanical interfaces, with the same form, fit and function in every aspect. The original motor was the Kollmorgen JR16, which has a

power output of just over 1 kW at 3000 rpm with around 3.5 Nm torque. The shaft, keyway, front register and mounting holes also had to have the same specification and tolerances, based in imperial dimensions throughout. A second version fitted with a brake was also required, again with identical performance. PMW's range of GR motors have a very similar internal construction to Kollmorgen's discontinued JR range, and PMW were able to design and manufacture the first motor with brake for evaluation in around eight weeks. "Having thoroughly inspected and tested the

performance of the evaluation motor, the client has declared it to be identical in performance to the Kollmorgen original," said Nick Revels, applications engineer at PMW.
