TRAINING COULD HELP BOOST EMPLOYEE WELLBEING W
ith many housebound homeworkers struggling under the latest lockdown, Bureau Veritas is keen to remind employers of the wellbeing
benefits to be had from providing regular training courses to employees. It comes as a record number of employees are struggling to combine
remote working with home-schooling under the UK’s Lockdown 3.0, which looks set to be in place until March at the earliest. As a result, latest research shows three in five UK business leaders said they now feel more responsible for their employees' health and wellbeing. Yet, according to a recent survey, more and more employees are
considering a career change or development with a record rise in demand for online learning. Indeed, companies such as automaker Skoda, like many other sectors, have taken their popular academy courses online and more than 16,500 employees have completed special training. With this in mind, health and safety authority Bureau Veritas is
encouraging employers to embrace virtual training for employees not only for the upskilling opportunities it presents, but also in terms of improving mental health, wellbeing and productivity. Oliver Dodd, UK training manager at Bureau Veritas stated: “It’s no
surprise that under the latest lockdown mental health and wellbeing is at an all-time low, especially for homeworkers juggling home- schooling with their day to day jobs. “And while it’s clear that employers want to support their workforce
during these testing times, not to be overlooked is the positive impact that training could have in terms of supporting employee wellbeing through reduced stress and providing purpose. In addition, virtual learning on key areas such as health and safety can help to improve compliance, productivity, minimise risk, and improve safety measures. “The good news is virtual and online courses have come on leaps and
bounds in the last year, as a whole host of sectors have sought to innovate and offer a plethora of great training designed to help those at
home to enhance their knowledge base at this time.” For instance, Bureau Veritas, has been working through the pandemic to
offer essential virtual training on key standards including IOSH, QMS, EMS, COSHH, OHSAS, and ISO. Dodd added: “As employers continue to navigate difficult waters, for
many 2020 was about surviving and continuing commercial operations. However, as the pandemic moves into yet another phase, there’s now a greater onus on investing in employee wellbeing and upskilling to ensure their workforce doesn’t become stagnant. “As such, we would urge employers to take advantage of this period by
taking stock of the wealth of courses out there – supporting employee wellbeing but also to ensure they are one step ahead of the competition and ready to take the lead in a post-coronavirus UK.”
