H
ealth and safety practitioners will have even more opportunities for professional
development in 2021 as NEBOSH has announced the launch of seven new qualifications for the early part of the year. Leading the way will be a new, one-day
wellbeing qualification this month. Titled NEBOSH Working with Wellbeing, this introductory course has been holistically developed to help employers support a person’s overall wellbeing. Updated fire and construction certificates
will follow. These popular qualifications have been refreshed to maintain their industry relevance and introduce greater practical application in the assessment. NEBOSH’s flagship qualifications, the national
and international Diplomas, will also be updated. Designed for senior professionals, the
NEBOSH Diploma is an industry benchmark, and
its update will maintain its industry relevance whilst supporting learners to develop the highest levels of competence. Testing will take place in the first quarter before its official launch later this year. A long-standing relationship with Great Britain’s
regulator, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), will also continue in 2021 with an exciting new qualification to benefit any business, in any industry. The NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work is currently in development. This one-day qualification looks at practical steps to manage and control risks caused by workplace hazards. NEBOSH chief executive, Chris Payne, said:
“Amongst the external challenges of the pandemic in 2021, it promises to be an exciting year for NEBOSH. We hope that our proactive response and expertise will continue to help learner develop their
skills and create safer workplaces across the world. Our qualifications are reputed for their rigour and relevance; by continually enhancing our portfolio we’ll ensure that health and safety professionals have a wide range of development opportunities for all stages of their career. “What’s more, we’re committed to enhancing
learners’ practical application, which will enable people who gain a NEBOSH qualification to be well equipped to manage real-life responsibilities, adding tangible value for their employers and the people and communities in their care.”

due to announce a ‘road map’ out of lockdown restrictions later this month. However, as many business premises have remained closed or functioned at greatly reduced occupancy for weeks, many are questioning how to safely manage the reopening of buildings. Industry experts are warning of the potential for unmanaged water systems to deteriorate or become colonised with bacteria. Find out how to approach safe water management in your facility on page 10.

new survey of SME decision makers conducted by YouGov
on behalf of World Kinect Energy Services has revealed that the manufacturing industry is one of the leading sectors to set sustainability goals, therefore reducing its carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Reducing the world’s emissions
and slowing down climate change has become a top priority. The UK Government recently set out its plan for a green industrial revolution to ensure the country reaches its 2050 net zero targets to reduce carbon emissions. YouGov conducted the survey on
behalf of leading energy management, fuel supply and sustainability company, World Kinect Energy Services, which
OVER HALF OF UK MANUFACTURERS ON TARGET TO ACHIEVE NET ZERO GOALS
included MDs and CEOs from over 12 different UK industries including hospitality, construction, retail, medical and health as well as manufacturing. The survey revealed that over
half (57 per cent) of UK manufacturing businesses have a sustainability plan in place to help reduce carbon emissions, and only 23 per cent admitted to not having any future plans to introduce one. Overall, 40 per cent of the 1,021
UK SMEs surveyed do not have a plan in place to become more sustainable, with 30 per cent not intending to put a net zero strategy in place at all. Fifty-three
per cent, however, do have a plan in place, which is hopeful that they will hit the 2050 deadline, yet only 34 per cent have actually achieved any goals.
