loss-preventing captive fasteners

W

DS Components has released a new range of loss-preventing captive fasteners that speed up manufacturing assembly and

make marine and working at height applications easier to manage. The fasteners span a wide range of thread diameters and also increase operational safety by preventing the removal and loss of machine safety guards. Highly durable 316 stainless steel means that the captive fasteners are suitable for use across all application environments. The captive fastener design has been

developed specifically by WDS in response to customer demand to prevent unintentional fastener removal or loss. The captive fastener is screwed into the host, for example an electrical component or machine guard, and the design features an unthreaded shank length between the fastener head and thread. This means that even when the fastener is unscrewed from the main frame, such as a printed circuit board (PCB) or a machine, the thread prevents the fastener from falling out of its intended position in the host.

afety functions without encoders reduce costs and increase process and machine safety. COMBIVERT

F6 drive controllers and COMBIVERT S6 servo drives from KEB Automation are now certified in the device variant ‘PRO’ for communication via the real-time Ethernet interface, Profinet. For the automation of their systems and processes, this means users have another standard available to implement concepts with encoderless safety. What is the goal of functional safety? The short

answer is to minimise the risks posed by technical equipment to people and the environment. Processing or machine tools, for example, can endanger operators or technicians through tools that rotate at high speeds. Functionally safe system solutions for

machines and plants are based on a consistent architecture right down to the mechanical interface. This results in potential savings in terms of space, time and costs, as well as expanded possibilities in application. Certified hardware and software are used to simplify project planning and development of applications with safety solutions.

Flexible and scalable in application

KEB drives offer scalable safety functions directly in the drive controller. In the PRO device variant, the COMBIVERT F6 and S6

enable the implementation of encoderless safety. Here, a flexible adaptation of the safety functions and limit values can be carried out via digital I/Os. Up to eight safety configurations are possible per function. The COMBIVIS 6 software tool from KEB enables customers to easily commission the various systems. The COMBIVERT F6 and S6 series cover a

wide power range from 0.75 kW up to 450 kW and can be used to operate different motor technologies such as asynchronous, synchronous, synchronous reluctance, IPM, torque, linear and high speed motors with speeds up to 45,000 rpm. The safe encoderless speed monitoring function can be used independently of the motor used and therefore for a variety of applications. Here, different installation and cooling versions ensure a high level of scalability in the application.

host by unscrewing it, and if the host does not include a pre-cut thread, the user can add one to suit the appropriate fastener size. This design means that the fastener does not require an additional washer, flange or nut to secure it. The fasteners are tightened by allen key, with additional head styles available in future according to demand. A primary benefit is the ease and speed for

manufacturing processes. Ensuring fastener retention is particularly useful for electronics assembly that uses small size fasteners which are easily dropped and lost. Once inserted, the captive fasteners prevent accidental loss, saving time in assembly and increasing manufacturing productivity. The captive fasteners can be used for automated or manual assembly processes. The new fasteners can also be used to

enhance machine safety by preventing the removal and loss of safety guards. The captive fasteners satisfy EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC that requires fixing systems to remain attached to a machine or machine guard.
