WORKPLACE SAFETY FEATURE 6 PERFORM A PPE AUDIT 5 VALUE VENTILATION
Employers have always had an obligation to ensure there is an adequate supply of fresh air (ventilation) in enclosed areas of the workplace but this has become even more important during the coronavirus pandemic. Maximising fresh air in a space reduces how much virus is in the air by limiting the risk from aerosol transmission. This can be achieved through natural ventilation, such as opening a window- and/or mechanical ventilation such as using fans and ducts to bring in fresh air from outside or by combining the two. HSE guidance on ventilation and air
conditioning during the coronavirus pandemic explains how you can identify poorly ventilated areas and improve natural and mechanical ventilation. Good ventilation has also been linked to
health benefits such as lower sickness absence and improvements in overall wellbeing.

Many new PPE products have found their way onto the market since the coronavirus out- break, so it is a good idea to perform an audit of the PPE in use on your site. Some products which are now widely available may look like traditional PPE but might not function in the same way. Some face coverings have the appearance of an FFP rated respiratory protective mask but do not meet the relevant standard and many COVID face visors are unlikely to offer the required levels of impact protection for industrial tasks. There is also concern about an increased volume of RPE with fake conformity certificates. Be vigilant and ensure employees are aware there is a difference between some COVID PPE and PPE designed to protect against other hazards. The BSIF has more information about how to identify fake PPE and how to find a reputable supplier.

KEEP COMMUNICATION CLEAR AND CONSISTENT
Experts suggest well-informed employees are more likely to embrace change, so ensuring employees feel engaged can improve compliance with ever-changing guidelines. What is more, employers are obliged to consult employees about any changes they make to the way they work due to coronavirus, so keeping lines of communication open is imperative. It is also important to recognise that the
coronavirus pandemic has rightly raised the profile of health and safety within many organisations. Clear and consistent communication can ensure it does not drop down the agenda even as the threat from coronavirus fluctuates.
