DUST & FUME EXTRACTION
hoods, which control air movement to capture particles / vapour; partial enclosures, which extract contaminants emitted through processes such as hand grinding and finishing; and full or partial enclosures, which are designed for automated processes such as laser coding or PCB manufacture. The precise design of each system will require
in-depth analysis of many different variables to ensure correct mitigation of risk. This analysis means taking account of
materials safety data sheets, the make-up and volume of airborne contaminants and/ or gases given off by the process, the type of production machinery, whether the process is enclosed, the duration of production and whether there are any associated thermal risks. Once armed with this information, BOFA will
use data-driven airflow analysis and control parameters to define the optimal filtration system, which will typically include the company’s patented DeepPleat DUO pre- filtration technology, a main High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter and a layer of activated carbon to remove vapours and gases. Some challenges go beyond capturing
airborne emissions, for example where extraction systems linked to some high energy and mechanical processes need to mitigate any potential fire risks. This is particularly important where a combustible dust has the potential to be drawn into the filtration system. Under these circumstances, managers should
implement mitigating maintenance procedures as well as specify a system benefiting from fire- resistant materials for casings and filters and thermal cut-out protection, and investigate technology such as BOFA’s Spark Arrestor 2 and FireBOX to mitigate risk. BOFA works closely with industry to tailor the
most effective extraction system for any given process. This is augmented by the company’s iQ operating platform, which incorporates a host of functions and innovations, including onboard data logs and real-time system condition visualisation so operators can easily monitor whole system performance. Better operational data can help drive better
productivity, for example by ensuring that filters are exchanged in step with production schedules, thereby avoiding unnecessary downtime.
