RANGE REVIEW: GARDEN & LANDSCAPING
NEW COLLECTIONS TO HELP MAXIMISE GARDEN SOIL
Gardens across the UK have different soil types due to the diverse landscape. The secret to a thriving garden lies in knowing how to identify and work with your soil. Expert gardener and author, Sarah Raven has launched four brand-new border collections each tailored to suit common soil types; clay, boggy ground, chalky, and sandy.
T
he curated bundles are an ideal starting point for gardeners working with new ground. Each bundle features a selection
of plants specifically chosen to suit the soil’s unique properties. Knowing common soils in your area gives you a head start in preparing your garden. Choosing plants that thrive in your soil will encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms. In clay soil, plant persicaria, veronicastrum virginicum, delavayi, and alchemilla mollis. These plants thrive in moisture-retentive soils, handling the dense structure well while also adding bold, brilliant colour that pollinators love. If you have particularly wet, waterlogged, and boggy soil you can still introduce spectacular colour. Rodgersia pinnata, matteuccia struthiopteris, and lobelia cardinalis all cope with poor drainage brilliantly.
A Mediterranean inspired garden is perfect for sandy soil. Consider erigeron , nepeta x faaseenii, lindheimeri, and thyme. These plants are reliable, perfumed, enjoy the well-drained conditions, and tolerate drought well.
The silty soil found in the North
West is ideal for irises, hardy geraniums, and willow trees
tricky. Lavender, philadelphus, verbena, and erysimum tolerate the soil’s alkaline nature and add a full, vibrant look that will be a hit with
visiting pollinators too.
Finally, if you’re lucky enough to have loamy soil, you can support a wide range of plants and vegetables. You can create both a thriving kitchen garden packed with carrots and tomatoes and perennial borders sporting abundant flowers like delphinium and phlox.
