Road to recoveryRoad to recovery
As I write this month’s comment, the Covid-19 vaccination programme continues to be rolled out across the UK, with those aged 40 now being offered a jab, and we are gradually emerging from lockdown as restrictions are eased. There are more people out and about and it’s certainly starting to feel like we are getting back to a more normal way of life once again. With the wearing of face coverings accepted and social distancing respected, we are now able to meet friends and go for a drink, albeit outside, and everyone is feeling more relaxed and a lot more positive about the future.
But the biggest change has been on the high street, as non-essential retail businesses have been allowed to reopen and start their journey on the road to recovery. Despite the massive shift towards online shopping that we saw at the height of the pandemic, it seems consumers are keen to get back out to bricks and mortar stores again, a fact borne out by the latest retail footfall figures (see lead news story on p4). And despite DIY, hardware stores and garden centres being classed as essential retail and therefore remaining open during most of the last year, they have also benefitted from the increased customer numbers. I noticed this myself when I recently paid a visit to my local DIY outlet, which seemed a lot busier than it has been for a while. This bodes well for a return to normality and an economic upturn that we all need and are hoping for.
