TRANSFORMING OUTDOOR SPACES USING COLOUR
Sheenagh Green from Colourtrend, and author, blogger and DIY enthusiast Caroline Carton of Dainty Dress Diaries share their top tips for reimagining outdoor spaces. “Making sure outdoor surfaces are properly
prepared for painting is key,” Sheenagh explains. “Following the rule of the 3 P’s – preparation; primer; paint – is so important if you want to achieve a professional looking finish. Colourtrend has several different primers, and which one of them you use depends on which surface you’re priming. Caroline adds: “Not priming before painting
my garden furniture and other outdoor pieces has actually cost me in the long run. I never thought to prime masonry, which meant I ended up with flaky

paint on my window sills and I had to redo them. Realistically, prep is going to save you in the long run so just taking that extra time in the beginning is going to really pay off.” Caroline says: “I follow the same method every time I paint a piece of garden furniture or any kind of outside space: I clean, then I apply a coat of primer, then my colour and finally two coats of satin finish.
“When I’m priming, I like to switch up between using a roller for getting a really good coat on and a brush for getting right into the corners and priming more detailed things.”
“When it comes to choosing the perfect
colour, there really are no rules! The garden is a great place to get bold and a little creative, so
experimenting with colours that I wouldn’t usually use in my home or matching colours with the flowers I’ve planted is something I like to dabble with. Personally, I love Brickstock for smaller items or pieces of furniture like metal chairs, while I tend to go for earthier colours like Nettle Soup for woodwork, such as barrels and planters.”
