Ready for tough times ahead
There’s no doubt that we are all feeling the pinch right now, whilst also bracing ourselves for what could be worse to come. Energy and fuel price increases aside, the economic forecasts are pretty gloomy, so we have to be prepared for some more challenging times ahead. However there is some good news this month in the form of BHETA’s latest economic report into DIY, garden, housewares and small domestic electricals. It confirms that while many sectors are experiencing year on year downturns, value and volume figures remain higher than prior to the pandemic in ours, so let’s hope this trend continues. See the news on page four for the full story.
The retailers I’ve spoken to recently are realistic about the situation and tend to be hoping for the best, while
preparing the worst, which is not a bad business strategy to take. Having just been through one of the worst public health emergencies and economic crisis of recent times and emerged in pretty good shape, there is strength and resilience within our industry that I’m sure will help it through what could be another stormy period ahead. One segment which has enjoyed a boom this year, thanks to the long hot summer, is gardening and outdoor living. I think we’ve all got used to the warm weather and spending more time outside. Yes, it has been a little too hot at times, but knowing the weather is going to be good does allow you to plan things easier and cooking, eating and socialising outdoors has definitely been enjoyable. Our feature on the subject in this issue looks at how to achieve outdoor living on a budget and some of the trends we can expect next year, as long as the weather stays fine of course.
