HARTLEY BOTANIC HONOURED WITH QUEEN’S AWARD FOR ENTERPRISE
Glasshouse and greenhouse manufacturer HARTLEY BOTANIC received its Queen’s Award for Enterprise for the exponential growth of its global sales over a three- year period. The Lancashire-based (North of England), 85-year-old business was honoured with an in-person factory visit from Mrs D. Hawkins JP LLB, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, who presented their prestigious award to Hartley Botanic’s Chairman, Martin Toogood.
Hartley Botanic is England’s most historic and
respected glasshouse and greenhouse manufacturer, specialising in luxury, bespoke and handmade structures. Operating from the same factory in Greenfield, Lancashire since 1938, the business has been selling its glasshouses internationally for over 20 years and has enjoyed a strong following in the US, Germany and Scandinavia, but between 2017 and 2020, its global trade built significantly. Since 2017, international sales grew by 144 percent,
replaced by the US as Hartley Botanic’s dominant market, as American customers fell for both the businesses’ quintessentially English-looking Victorian Glasshouses and its contemporary Modern Horticulture range which has proved particularly popular in the state of California. The next strongest markets for the business became Germany, Italy, Ireland and Portugal. The company also broke into completely new international markets, namely Italy, Norway, Slovakia and Estonia. Hartley Botanic wins the Queen’s Award for International Trade for Outstanding Short-Term Growth in overseas sales over three years. Of the visit and award presentation by the Lord- Lieutenant, Martin Toogood, Chairman of Hartley Botanic said: “It has been an incredibly proud week for our Hartley Botanic team here in Saddleworth, Lancashire and around the world. We are overwhelmed that our work has been recognised at the highest level – a work ethic and ambition which has been present in the business throughout its 85-year-old history. Our Glasshouses and Greenhouses represent the very best in English engineering, design and manufacture and it is a privilege to share this with the rest of the world.” Mrs Diane Hawkins JP LLB, His Majesty’s Lord- Lieutenant of Greater Manchester said: “It gave me great pleasure to present Hartley Botanic with their Queen’s Award. We are proud of their achievements and their outstanding example of a Greater Manchester-based business reaching across the world. They continue to go from strength to strength maintaining their strong commitment to making ‘the finest Glasshouses money can buy’ for nearly a century. Their glasshouses are rightly recognised worldwide as an outstanding British made product and I know how much difference a Queen’s Award makes in terms of recognition of excellence. This Award is richly deserved by the whole company.”
