P10 / RANGE REVIEW A closer look at key issues affecting the security &
safety market
“Don’t let the DIY industry lag behind on this issue”
Founded in 1874
I really had my eyes opened doing research for the feature about cybercrime and hacking in the security & safety range review in this issue. I don’t think I realised the capabilities of hackers and the full extent of what they are able to access fairly easily; neither was I clued up about level of information out there – something that I’ve no doubt many companies have underestimated as well. The fact that there are so many online tutorials and Youtube videos showing viewers how to hack everyday products, from smart plugs, to bluetooth door locks and wireless security systems, was unbelievable. One was even titled ‘how to hack CCTV using primitive methods’. It is a huge concern – not just to individuals thinking about their personal security, but to the industry as a whole. If you are developing so-called smart or connected products, you need to be thinking about securing those devices from a potential breach and, in turn, protecting the users – your customers. I certainly don’t mean to use shock tactics but I get the impression that many people
don’t appreciate the sheer scale of the issue and, with consumers putting their trust in brands and retailers, they have a responsibility to ensure the items they sell do what they promise and don’t leave the public vulnerable. Security expert Mary-Jo de Leeuw, who I interviewed for the feature, told me she often meets resistance when trying to raise awareness of the issue and educate companies about what steps they should be taking. However, attitudes are changing in certain sectors, so don’t let the DIY industry lag behind on this issue and be the wall that people like Mary-Jo come up against when they are trying to secure the future of the smart sector.
