P15 / INDEPENDENT FOCUS Our quarterly special puts the spotlight on the indie
sector, with news, retailer profiles and expert advice Editor, Fiona Garcia:

“Our panel was ‘wowed’ by the busi- nesses and achievements put forward this year”
Founded in 1874
Everyone likes a good success story
There’s a real celebration of independents in this issue, it seems. Of course, we have our quarterly Independent Focus, which always strives to put the spotlight on indies and the issues and news affecting their businesses – but we have also revealed our DIY Week Award retailer finalists this week, which include a fantastic selection of – you guessed it – independent retailers. Our judging panel was ‘wowed’ by the businesses and achievements put forward in this
year’s entries, so the finalists on that list are very worthy of their place. And, quite honestly, even the retailers that didn’t make the shortlist demonstrated some fantastic initiatives, ambitious expansion plans and great customer service supported by passionate staff. Our judges didn’t have an easy job narrowing entries down and picking the finalists but it did leave us all feeling suitably cheered by the quality of retail we have on offer across the country. With times still pretty tough on the high street (you know it’s difficult if even Screwfix is
reporting a slowdown in its impressive sales streak), it makes it all the more encouraging to then spend a day discussing retail businesses who are being pro-active in their willingness to adapt and grow to stay ahead of the changing market – and, more importantly, to hear that their actions are paying off. We all like a good success story! On the topic of success and growing sales, we also take a closer look at adhesives and sealants in this issue, with leading suppliers offering their tips on how retailers – big and small – can maximise sales and make a success of the category with just a few simple steps.
If you’re looking to make changes in your business, why not start small by implementing a few simple actions in one category and see where you go from there?
