AND FINALLY Bradfords partners with Mental Health UK
Bradfords Building Supplies, has announced a partnership with the charity Mental Health UK to help promote the support available for those working in the industry. Mental Health UK supports people affected by mental health problems across the UK, bringing together over 40 years of expertise from its four national founding charity partners to improve understanding and provide vital care. Alarmingly, according to the Office of National Statistics, male site workers in construction are three times more likely to die by suicide than the average UK male. Bradfords has pledged its support to the charity and will help to promote its work to tradespeople who may be struggling with their mental health. Giles Bradford,
Communications & Engagement Manager at Bradfords Buildings Supplies, said: “The shocking mental health statistics from our
industry are a vivid reminder of the difficulties faced by many working in construction every day – not least during the current pandemic where tradespeople are under incredible amounts of stress carrying out important work.’ “As a family-owned business, people are at the heart of what we do and we know that many of our employees and customers are likely to be impacted in some way by poor mental health. This partnership will help us to do more to tackle the stigma that still exists and provide guidance to help support our amazing legion of customers across the region. This year marks our 250th anniversary and with it being Mental Health Awareness Week, we couldn’t be more proud to begin this new partnership.” Bradfords’ partnership with Mental Health UK also aims to help change the industry’s perception of mental health and provide people with the
Braving the shave at National Timber
Richard Jarvis and Peter Howarth of National Timber Group have pledged to shave their luscious locks in aid of Cancer Research UK and Timber Trade Benevolent Society with the aim of raising £5,000.
The pair are asking their peers to join in with the ‘Corona Cut Challenge’, each committing to brave the shave and raise £100. Jarvis, operations director at the Engineered Timber Systems division of National Timber Group, said: “Many of this year’s charity events have been cancelled. It’s important that we continue to support these fantastic organisations.
“After attending many virtual meetings, it’s clear a lot of us are long overdue a trim and have some unspent haircut money. We’re hoping we can get together a team of 50 volunteers, which would help us meet our goal.”

Howarth, new build director at National Timber Group, added: “The timber industry has a very friendly and supportive community, which, under regular circumstances, would be raising money via charity dinners and golf days.
“As this isn’t possible at the moment, we’re encouraging as many people as possible to join our challenge. I’m sure our customers, suppliers, and even competitors will hear our calls for help and the response will be impressive.” • https://www.justgiving. com/team/coronacutchallenge
confidence to have open conversations about mental wellbeing.
Brian Dow, CEO of Mental Health UK, added: “We’re delighted to be working with Bradfords Building Supplies. Our partnership will help to support colleague wellbeing and raise vital funds for Mental Health UK. With the construction industry particularly impacted by mental
health problems and during a time where Bradfords colleagues have been continuing essential work throughout the covid-19 crisis, it’s more important than ever to stay not just physically safe but mentally healthy. We look forward to working with Bradfords and their colleagues to transform the perception of mental health, one conversation at a time.”
Tarmac supports Band of Builders’ latest project
Tarmac’s Cement and Lime business has sponsored Band of Builders’ to provide funds and Blue Circle products to build an extension for the family of a boy who is living with Mitochondrial Disease. Band of Builders, a charity
which lends a helping hand to tradesmen during their time of need, developed a small extension on the front of the Dodd family’s house, with ramped access to make the property more accessible for their son, James.
Mitochondrial Disease is a life-limiting condition to which there is no cure. Having lost the use of his legs, James is now reliant on a wheelchair and walking frame. Band of Builders was keen to support the Dodd family and provide James with a convenient access point to the family home to make everyday life more comfortable.
Gavin Crane, Trustee at Band of Builders said: “Despite dealing with his illness, James is still a cheeky, funny 11-year-old. He and his family really are an inspiration to us all and we’re privileged that we could help with our first Band of Builders project of 2020. It won’t go any way to changing what this family has to go through, but it might just make things a little bit easier.
Gareth Osborne, Senior Marketing Manager said: “James is an inspiring young man and we were pleased to support Band of Builders in making his family home more accessible.”.
