Spotlight

Upskilling with compliance

This month the Spotlight falls on engineering training provider Paddeco… Who is Paddeco?

Paddeco provides training and assessment for the engineering and construction sectors across the UK. We create an avenue for engineering trades to prove their competency and skills thus ensuring they are able to acquire a recognised qualifi cation and obtain the necessary competence card such as CSCS card/SKILLcard, thereby ensuring accessibility to construction sites. Following publication of the UK Government’s Draft Building Safety Bill,

there is a growing demand to prove competency within the workplace, this could be for future employers, health and safety legislation, or insurance coverage. Paddeco is able to off er on-site learning and development programmes that suit candidates’ needs as well as helping them to gain a recognised qualifi cation.

Describe your product

We currently off er three qualifi cations: 1. Level 2: SVQ in Heating and Ventilating Ductwork Installation 2. Level 3: Heating and Ventilating Ductwork Planning and Installation 3. SCQF Level 5: Ventilation Hygiene Certifi cate All three qualifi cations are based on the National Occupational Standards, thus ensuring the highest possible standard of compliance and competence for our candidates. Our qualifi ed assessors and IQAs work closely with all candidates on a one-on-one basis, visiting them in their workplace at a time that’s convenient to them and providing learning and assistance remotely over the duration of their course. There is currently high demand for all three qualifi cations with the industry

recognising all three for a CSCS card/ SKILLcard. We are continually being approached by individual candidates and larger construction companies that want to ensure their workforce is compliant and working to the National Occupational Standards for insurance purposes.

What are your future plans?

Come October 2021, in a fi rst for the industry, Paddeco will be off ering two, brand new qualifi cations developed with the SQA (Scottish Qualifi cations Authority): • SCQF Level 5: Installation of Fire Resisting Ductwork and Ventilation Systems • SCQF: Fire and Smoke Damper Certifi cate Companies off ering this service continue to appear, yet many of them

hold no formal qualifi cation. There is a real lack of understanding of National Occupational Standards and what it takes to be both competent and compliant in the role for companies to protect their employees and operatives to protect themselves, as well as the public. The damper installation task has morphed into a specifi c role for the

industry, and the critical nature of the job is now being realised. Given the Government’s proposed new competence and compliance

requirements, that will be enforced in the coming years, even installers with outdated Ductwork NVQs will need to be upskilled. To that end, Paddeco, along with The National Association of Air Duct Specialists UK (NAADUK), have been working to the National Occupational Standards to ensure this work is completed to legal standards, with two new customised award qualifi cations for the ventilation industry, developed with the SQA and credit rated on the Scottish Credit and Qualifi cations Framework (SCQF).

The optional units on the new qualifi cations off er operatives a career path

for ventilation renewal works and maintenance, in particular the BSEHV05 J4FE 04, which provides the opportunity to broaden their range on the installation of ventilation systems beyond just a fi re rated system. This will allow companies to serve their clients in a better way, in not just

off ering an inspection service, but to address any additional works after the fi ndings of the inspection. It also off ers the chance to upskill installers and for them to be assessed against the National Occupational Standards for their job role.
